Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You are practicing with your learner's permit on a two-lane road posted at 50 mph. You feel in control at 40 mph, and a line of five cars has formed behind you. What does Vermont law require you to do?
Blue A leads a line of five silver cars on a two-lane road. The road and its edge line continue evenly across the image. No pull-off bay, selected route or stopping point is shown.
Correct answer: Pull off the road at the first safe place, and let the cars behind you go by.
Why
A driver who goes much slower than other traffic can create a hazard, because drivers stuck behind may try to pass in unsafe places. When traffic backs up behind you, Vermont law requires you to pull off at the first safe place and let it go by. You can then drive on in a calmer way. New drivers should first practice in empty parking lots or on quiet roads, and move to busier roads as their skills improve.
