On an interstate, the fixed signs show SPEED LIMIT 70. Because of a crash ahead, an electronic sign over your lane now shows SPEED LIMIT 45. What is your legal maximum speed here?
A approaches a gantry on a two-lane interstate carriageway. An exact electronic SPEED LIMIT 45 face is mounted over A's lane; a fact card states that fixed signs show 70 mph and a crash is ahead.
Correct answer: 45 mph, while the electronic sign shows that limit
Why
Some Virginia roads have electronic speed limit signs that change with weather or traffic. The Code lets the Commissioner of Highways set these variable limits on interstates, bridges and tunnels, and it is unlawful to drive faster than the posted maximum. The lower limit gives you time to slow down before a backup or a crash scene. Even at or below the posted limit, you can get a ticket if your speed is too fast for the conditions.
