You come to a STOP sign that has a white stop line. The cross street looks clear, and no people are near the corner. What must you do?
A approaches an exact STOP sign, a white stop line, and an empty cross street. No people are near the corner.
Correct answer: Stop completely at the stop line, then go when it is safe
Why
The eight-sided sign always means a complete stop. Virginia law sets the stop point: at a marked stop line; with no line, before the crosswalk; with no crosswalk, at the point nearest the cross street where you can see approaching traffic. After the stop, yield to traffic on the cross street from both directions. A plaque that reads ALL WAY or 4 WAY means that traffic on every approach must also stop.
