You drive in the left lane of an undivided four-lane road with two lanes in each direction. A yellow center line is on your left, and a broken white line is on your right. What do these lines tell you?
A travels in the left lane of one half of a four-lane undivided road. Yellow center paint lies to its left and a broken white line to its right; other lanes contain no cars or direction arrows.
Correct answer: Traffic beyond the yellow line goes the opposite way; traffic beyond the white line goes the same way as you.
Why
Line color tells you which way the traffic next to you is moving: white lines separate lanes that go the same way, and yellow lines separate traffic that goes opposite ways. On an Interstate, a one-way street or a divided four-lane road, a solid yellow line marks the left edge of the pavement instead. Reading the colors correctly helps you choose a safe lane and keeps you from turning or changing lanes into oncoming traffic.
