Passing target: 80% (52/65)
You come to a railroad crossing that has flashing red lights but no gate. The lights start to flash as you get near. What should you do?
A approaches an ungated railroad crossing whose paired mast lamps flash red. The crossbuck and lamps stand on A’s right before the near rail; no stopping target is marked.
Correct answer: Stop before the tracks, and wait until the lights stop flashing and the tracks are clear.
Why
Crossing lights flash when a train comes from either direction. A train cannot stop quickly, and it is often closer and faster than it seems. Stop before the tracks, never on them, and do not try to beat the train. When the lights go off, look both ways again, and cross only if there is room for your car on the other side.
