You drive into a work zone. A flagger holds a paddle that shows STOP toward you. The traffic light just past the work area is green. What should you do?
A approaches a STOP paddle held by a flagger. A separate detail shows the traffic signal beyond the work area lit green; no selected stop mark is present.
Correct answer: Stop where the flagger shows, and go only when the flagger turns the paddle to SLOW or waves you on.
Why
In a work zone, a flagger controls traffic, often in one open lane that traffic from both directions must share. The handbook says that you must follow the directions of police, crossing guards and other workers such as flaggers, even when these are different from a traffic light or sign. You may not be able to see the traffic or the workers that the flagger protects. When you see a flagger ahead sign, slow down and be ready to stop.
