On a Wisconsin freeway, a sign reads SHOULDER USE PERMITTED ON GREEN ARROW ONLY. You are driving in the shoulder lane, and the signal above it changes from a green arrow to a yellow X. What should you do?

Correct answer: Merge into the general-purpose lane next to you when it is safe.
Why
Some Wisconsin highways let drivers use the paved shoulder as a travel lane, called a flex lane, at busy times. Signals over the lane control it: a green arrow means open, a yellow X means closing, and a red X means closed. A merge sign marks the end of the flex lane, and large trucks may not use it. At other times and places, the shoulder is not a travel lane. Wisconsin law requires you to obey official signs and signals.
