Freeways & High-Speed RoadsStandalone practice
You enter a freeway where the posted limit is 70 mph. From the acceleration lane, you see that traffic in the right lane moves at about 75 mph. What speed should you aim for when you merge?
Correct answer: About 70 mph, because the posted limit also applies while you merge.
Why
A speed close to that of the traffic makes a merge easier, but other drivers who go too fast do not change the limit for you. In Wisconsin, 70 mph applies only where signs post it, and the law forbids any speed over a posted limit. Signal, check your mirrors and your blind spot, and move into a gap that does not make another driver brake.
