You drive on a four-lane highway with a raised concrete median. On the other side of the median, a school bus that goes the other way stops with its red lights flashing. What should you do?
A and a stopped school bus travel in opposite directions on a four-lane highway divided by a raised concrete median. The bus’s red lamps flash.
Correct answer: Continue with care, because the median divides the highway.
Why
The school bus stop rule has one exception: drivers who go the other way on a divided highway. A divided highway has a median or barrier between the lanes that go in opposite directions. Painted lines alone do not divide a highway, so on a four-lane road with only painted lines, traffic from both directions must stop. Drivers behind the bus must always stop at least 20 feet away.
