You drive in the left lane of a three-lane freeway. A sign shows that your exit is on the right in 2 miles. How should you get to the exit?
A is in the leftmost of three freeway lanes. The card gives a right exit 2 miles ahead; the exit itself is beyond the displayed road segment.
Correct answer: Move right early, one lane at a time, with a signal and a blind-spot check for each move.
Why
Last-second lane changes cause crashes. Exit signs show the side of the road where the exit is, so you have time to get into the correct lane. Before each lane change, signal, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder, because the mirrors do not show your blind spots. Wisconsin law allows a lane change only when it is safe for traffic behind you. If you still miss the exit, take the next one.
