Your 17-year-old friend rides in the back seat. She buckles her seat belt but puts the shoulder part under her arm because it rubs her neck. What should you tell her?
A close-up of a buckled passenger’s torso shows the shoulder strap beneath the arm and across the lower chest. The lap belt lies low across the hips. No corrected routing is shown.
Correct answer: Move the shoulder belt across her chest, with the lap belt snug and low on her hips.
Why
Wisconsin law requires the driver and the passengers to wear seat belts, and the driver is responsible for passengers who are 8 or older. A belt that is worn correctly keeps a person in the seat and prevents the person from being thrown from the vehicle. A shoulder belt under the arm or loose over the arm lets the upper body move forward and can cause injury. Always buckle up before you start to drive.
