You press the brake pedal, and it sinks to the floor with little effect. What should you do?
Correct answer: Pump the brake pedal fast, use the parking brake with care, and shift down.
Why
If your brakes fail, pumping the pedal can build up enough pressure to slow the car. Use the parking brake, but hold the release so you can ease off if the rear wheels lock and the car starts to skid. Shift to a lower gear to use the engine to slow down, stop off the roadway, and do not try to drive to a garage.
