On the Interstate, you see a highway maintenance truck stopped on the right shoulder with its warning lights flashing. The left lane is clear. What must you do?
A approaches a highway maintenance truck stopped on the right shoulder of a two-lane carriageway. The card states that the truck's warning lights are flashing.
Correct answer: Merge into the lane farthest from the truck as soon as it is safe.
Why
Wyoming's Move Over Law applies to emergency vehicles and to municipal, public utility, and highway construction or maintenance vehicles that are stopped, or moving at less than 20 mph, on or within 3 feet of the road with warning lights on. On a highway with two or more lanes in your direction, you must move over to the lane farthest from the stopped vehicle, or stay at least one lane of traffic away, as soon as it is safe, unless a police officer directs otherwise. This gives workers and responders a safety buffer from passing traffic.
