Heavy rain has left a layer of water on the highway. What is the best way to reduce the risk that your tires hydroplane?
A travels on a rain-covered road. An enlarged tire detail shows water separating the tire from the surface.
Correct answer: Slow down so the tires stay in contact with the road.
Why
In hydroplaning, a layer of water lifts the tires off the pavement, so steering and braking stop working well. The Wyoming manual's answer is to slow down. In rain, also double your following time to about four seconds, use low beams, and take extra care in the first half hour, when oil and dust make the road slick. Tires with worn tread lose grip on wet roads more easily.
