You are stopped behind a tractor-trailer at a city intersection. The truck signals a right turn and swings left, which opens a gap between the truck and the curb. What should you do?
A is behind a right-signaling tractor-trailer at a city intersection. The truck has moved left, leaving a gap beside the right curb.
Correct answer: Stay back, out of the gap, and wait until the truck completes its turn.
Why
Large trucks need extra room to turn and often swing wide to the left before a right turn. The gap that opens on the right is in the truck driver's blind spot, or No-Zone, and a car that moves into it can be crushed when the truck completes the turn; this is a right-turn squeeze. Trucks also have large blind spots directly behind them and along both sides, so stay out of these areas and give heavy vehicles room to maneuver.
