On an icy road, you accelerate too quickly and the rear of your car starts to slide. What should you do?
A's rear is shown starting to slide left on a slippery road, illustrating one possible direction of the skid described in the question.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas and steer gently in the direction you want to go.
Why
In a skid, stay calm and stop the action that started it: ease off the gas if you accelerated, or ease up on the brake if you braked hard. Steer gently to keep the car going straight down your lane, and be ready to steer the other way as the car comes out of the skid. Sharp steering or braking can cause a second skid, and owners of front-wheel-drive cars should also read the owner's manual for skid advice.
