At dusk on a rural highway, a deer jumps onto the road just ahead of you. It is too close to avoid. What should you do?
A deer is in A's lane ahead, with another car approaching in the opposite lane. The card states that A may be unable to stop before reaching the animal.
Correct answer: Brake as hard as you safely can, keep control, and stay on the road.
Why
If a crash with an animal cannot be avoided, do not swerve suddenly; leaving your lane or the road can cause a worse crash and a greater risk of injury. Brake as quickly as you safely can, and keep control of the vehicle before, during and after the impact. To prevent these crashes, slow down where deer crossing signs are posted, scan the roadside as well as the road, and take extra care at dusk, at dawn, and in the fall and spring.
