P0128: Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temp Below Regulating Temperature)

The engine isn't reaching its target operating temperature in the time the computer expects. In Canadian winters this is a very common code — the cabin heater feels weak and fuel economy drops because the engine stays in warm-up mode longer than it should.

Common causes

What usually triggers P0128?

  1. 1Stuck-open thermostat (most common)
  2. 2Failing engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
  3. 3Low coolant level
  4. 4Damaged or missing winter front / grille block in extreme cold
  5. 5Faulty cooling fan running constantly

Causes are listed roughly in order of how often they're seen on Canadian independent-shop tickets. Always confirm with a scan-tool freeze-frame and a circuit/sensor check before replacing parts.
