U0101: Lost Communication With Transmission Control Module

A communication-bus fault. One module on the CAN bus can't reach another. On modern vehicles every system from the gauge cluster to the ABS module talks over CAN, so these codes can light multiple warning lights at once. Voltage problems and rodent-damaged wiring are common Canadian causes.

Common causes

What usually triggers U0101?

  1. 1Discharged or weak 12V battery
  2. 2Failed alternator causing voltage dropouts
  3. 3Damaged CAN bus wiring (often rodent damage)
  4. 4Failed module on the bus
  5. 5Corroded module connector (water intrusion)

Causes are listed roughly in order of how often they're seen on Canadian independent-shop tickets. Always confirm with a scan-tool freeze-frame and a circuit/sensor check before replacing parts.
