Alaska Driver's License Fees: Permit, License and Road Test (2026)

informational·how to guide·

Where the Alaska fee amounts come from

The amounts come from the Alaska DMV license fees page. The DMV road test page gives the road test rules, and the DMV REAL ID page explains the REAL ID fee. Other DMV pages (instruction permit, provisional license, first license, renewal, turning 21, duplicate license, rural driving, business partners), the Alaska Driver Manual and Alaska Statutes AS 28.15.061 to AS 28.15.101 cover the other details. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (dmv.alaska.gov) before you drive.

What REAL ID adds to the price

A REAL ID adds a $20 fee to the regular card fee. For a new Class D license, that is a $20 license fee plus a $20 REAL ID fee, so $40. Getting a REAL ID is optional, and you must apply in person. The instruction permit is the exception: it comes in one version only, so you pay $15 whether or not you plan to get a REAL ID later.

How much is the Alaska road test?

A non-commercial road test at the DMV costs $15 for a car or a motorcycle, and the DMV gives road tests at some of its offices. You pay before the test, and the fee is not refundable. You can reschedule 24 hours before your appointment for no fee. Schedule a DMV road test online, or contact a business partner: business partners are private businesses that charge a fee for service. DMV-authorized third-party testers are independent businesses and set their own fees, so ask for the price first. Our guide to the Alaska road test covers what you must bring.

Which Alaska fees apply to you?

You are 14 or older and want a learner's permit
Pay $15. Bring the application (Form D1) and, if you are under 18, parental consent (Form 433). The permit is valid for two years, and one renewal costs $5. Try our free practice question on the approval an applicant under 18 needs.
You are 16 or 17 and want a provisional license
Hold your permit for at least six months, then pass a road test ($15 at the DMV). Parental consent (Form 433) is required on every application under 18, and you pay the applicable license fees.
You are 18 or older and want your first Class D license
For the road test, bring your instruction permit or General Knowledge Test scores from the past year. The DMV road test costs $15, and the license costs $20, or $40 for a REAL ID.
Your license was suspended, revoked or limited
Pay the reinstatement fee for your case: the table below lists each amount. A limited license application costs $100.

Example: the DMV fees for a first Class D license

A new driver 18 or older who gets a permit, takes one DMV road test and gets a standard Class D license pays $15 + $15 + $20 = $50 in DMV fees. With a REAL ID, the license costs $40, so the total is $15 + $15 + $40 = $70. A teen who later removes the provisional restriction pays $15 for the new license, and a third-party road test can cost a different amount. The guide to the Alaska instruction permit at 14 explains the permit steps.

Alaska license fees: common questions

How long is an Alaska driver license good for?

By law (AS 28.15.101), a new Alaska license expires on your birthday in the eighth year after it is issued, so cards now last up to 8 years. If your stay in the United States is authorized for less than eight years, the DMV issues the license only for the period of that stay. Alaska gives no grace period: driving with an expired license is illegal.

What does it cost to renew my Alaska license at 21?

A license issued before you turn 21 expires 90 days after your 21st birthday. Pass the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Test at a DMV office, or online and then tell the DMV that you passed. Renew after your birthday: the renewal costs $20 for a standard Class D license or $40 for a REAL ID.

Can I renew my Alaska license by mail or online?

Yes, if you qualify. You can renew online, and the DMV takes a mail renewal if you are over 22, your personal information has not changed and your last renewal was not by mail. A mail renewal costs $1 more. By law, you cannot renew by mail or online if your last renewal was by mail or online, or if you are 69 or older on the expiration date. An in-person renewal includes an eyesight test.

What does a replacement Alaska license cost?

A duplicate Class D license costs $15 for a standard card and $35 for a REAL ID, and you can apply online. If you are out of state, you can apply online and get a temporary license by email. The DMV processes this within 1 to 2 business days.
