Alabama Road Skills Test: What the Examiner Checks and Why People Fail

informational·how to guide·

Where the Alabama road test rules come from

The vehicle check, documents and testing rules come from the Alabama Driver Manual. The task list and the reasons to fail come from the ALEA road test study guide, an older guide that ALEA still links. Stage II booking details come from the ALEA Graduated Driver License page. The testing rule for first-time applicants is in Code of Alabama section 32-6-3. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (alea.gov) before you drive.

What to bring and what the examiner checks on your car

  • Before the test starts, the examiner inspects the car. It must be in safe operating condition with working brake lights, left and right turn signals, and a horn.
  • Bring proof of insurance and the vehicle registration.
  • A rental car works only if your name is on the rental agreement as an additional driver.
  • A 16-year-old applicant must come with a parent or guardian.
  • An applicant who is 18 or older and wants to complete all testing needs a licensed driver, proof of car insurance and a car that will pass inspection.
  • If your license carries a corrective lenses restriction, wear your glasses or contacts for the test.

Driving tasks on the Alabama road test and what the examiner expects

Driving tasks on the Alabama road test and what the examiner expects
TaskWhat the examiner expects
ControlsYou know where the brake, parking brake, light switch, wiper control, ignition and gear selector are and how to use them.
PostureBoth hands on the wheel, no elbow in the window, and sit up straight. Buckle your safety belt before you turn on the ignition.
Smooth stopYou stop as quickly and safely as possible from a low speed and check the traffic behind you in the rearview mirror.
BackingYou back about 50 feet at a slow speed, as straight and smoothly as you can, with your head turned to the right and your eyes to the rear.
Stop signYou signal, approach in the proper lane, stop at the marked stop line (or before the crosswalk) and stay stopped until you can go without interfering with cross traffic.
Traffic lightYou approach at a speed that lets you stop if the light changes. On red, you stop before the crosswalk.
Three-point turnYou turn around in a narrow street by backing only one time, without bumping the curb or using a driveway.
Stop on an upgradeYou signal, stop parallel to the curb and within 18 inches of it, and set the parking brake. With an automatic, put the car in PARK.

More tasks: hill starts, turns, lanes, right of way and speed

  • Start on an upgrade: look to the left rear, then pull out slowly. Do not race the motor or let the car roll back.
  • Turns: signal at least 100 feet before the intersection, slow down before the crosswalk, and stop the signal once you reach the crosswalk. Keep both hands on the wheel during the turn.
  • Lanes: signal before every lane change and glance over your shoulder to check the blind spot. On roads with four or more lanes, stay in the right lane except to pass or turn left.
  • Right of way: let people on foot cross in front of you, do not block an intersection, and pull over and stop for a siren or for flashing red or blue lights.
  • Horn: use it to warn pedestrians, not to signal friends, hurry drivers or clear an intersection.
  • Following distance: use the two-second rule.
  • Speed and lights: stay under the posted limit and keep your speed reasonable for the conditions. Alabama law requires headlights when your windshield wipers are on because of rain, sleet or snow.
  • On the test you may have to do all or some of these tasks, so practice each one.

Why people fail the Alabama driving test

  • You are in an accident during the test.
  • You break a traffic law.
  • You drive in a reckless or dangerous way.
  • You do not cooperate with the examiner.
  • You make several safe-driving errors that come from habit or too little practice.

How small errors add up on the Alabama road test

The fifth reason means that several small errors can fail you, even with no crash and no broken law. Keep the turn signal on for at least the last 100 feet before the turn, as in this turn signal practice question. In reverse, look over your right shoulder to the rear and do not depend on the mirror, the point of the question on looking while backing. Do not make a three-point turn on an interstate freeway, on a curve, or near a hilltop where drivers cannot see you within 500 feet.

Who takes the road test, and when

You are 16 or 17
Hold the Stage I learner license for at least six months before you apply for Stage II (Code of Alabama section 32-6-7.2). At 16 you also need a consent form signed by a parent, legal guardian, or a grandparent with parent consent, and either 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice or a State Department of Education driver education certificate. The DL-31 and driver education guide explains both.
You pass the road test at 16 or 17
You give up the learner license at the test and get a regular license without the learner "Y" restriction. Under the law, a 16-year-old with a regular license, or a 17-year-old licensed for less than six months, has a Stage II restricted license.
You are 18 or older
You can apply for a Stage III (unrestricted) license at once, and you must pass the road skills exam. Bring a licensed driver, proof of insurance and a car that will pass inspection.

Appointments and walk-ins for the road skills exam

For the Stage II road skills exam, ALEA offers online appointments up to two weeks ahead, in select locations. Walk-ins are welcome at all testing sites. After you pass, read the Stage II restricted license rules so that you know the limits on night driving and passengers.

Key takeaways

  • The examiner checks your car first: brake lights, left and right turn signals and a horn. Bring proof of insurance and registration.
  • Under 18, hold your Stage I learner license for at least six months before you apply for Stage II.
  • You can fail for an accident, breaking the law, reckless driving, not cooperating with the examiner, or several small errors.
  • Practice the specific tasks: backing about 50 feet, a three-point turn, a stop within 18 inches of the curb, and a signal 100 feet before turns.
  • Next step: practice the rules of the road on the free Alabama Class D learner license practice test.

Alabama road test: common questions

Can I take my Alabama road test in a rental car?

Only if your name appears on the rental agreement as an additional driver. The examiner also inspects the rental car like any other, so brake lights, left and right turn signals and the horn must work. Bring proof of insurance and the registration for the car.

What is the 18-inch rule on the Alabama driving test?

The 18 inches is the most space allowed between your car and the curb when you stop on an upgrade. Then turn the wheels sharply to the left and let the car roll back until the back of the right front wheel rests against the curb. With no curb, turn the wheels to the right. Turn off the ignition and set the parking brake.

How do I check the two-second following distance?

Pick a fixed object ahead, such as a sign. When the car in front passes it, start counting. If you reach the object before you finish counting "one thousand two", you follow too closely. In bad road or weather conditions, increase the gap to a four or five second count.

Do I have to wear glasses on the Alabama road test?

Yes, if your license has a corrective lenses restriction. Drivers with that restriction must wear their glasses or contacts when they take the road test. The restriction comes from the vision exam: if it shows that you need lenses to see well, you must wear them every time you drive, not only on test day.

Can my driver education class give me the road test?

Yes, if your instructor is trained as a third party testing agent. Alabama law lets a high school driver education student give ALEA proof of a passed driving test from a certified driver education instructor. In a process that ALEA announced in 2020, results of State Department of Education students go to ALEA automatically, and ALEA removes the "Y" restriction on the 16th birthday if the permit was held for six months.
