Alberta Class 7 Learner's Licence Rules: Supervisor, Curfew and Passengers

informational·how to guide·

Where the Alberta Class 7 rules come from

Alberta sets these rules on the Class 7 learner's licence page and in the 2026 Driver's Guide. The law is the Traffic Safety Act and the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation (learner rules in section 32). Night time is defined in the Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation, and the demerit rules are in the Demerit Point Program and Service of Documents Regulation. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (alberta.ca) before you drive.

Who can supervise a Class 7 learner?

With a supervisor, a Class 7 licence lets you drive a Class 5 vehicle, such as a car. Your supervisor must be 18 or older and hold a full (non-GDL) Class 5 licence or higher that is valid for the vehicle you drive. Under the Traffic Safety Act, a person with a learner's or probationary licence cannot supervise you. Driving without a qualified supervisor next to you costs 2 demerit points. Practise this rule with the supervisor question on the free Alberta practice test.

Can this person sit next to you?

Your friend is 19 and holds a full Class 5 licence
Yes. They are 18 or older, fully licensed and can sit in the front passenger seat.
Your sibling is 20 and holds a Class 5-GDL (probationary) licence
No. A Class 5-GDL driver cannot supervise a learner. They can do it only after they leave the GDL program.
Your parent is 45 and holds a full Class 5 licence, but sits in the back seat
No. The supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat.

Can a Class 7 learner drive at night in Alberta?

You may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. Driving during these hours costs 2 demerit points. The curfew question on the free Alberta practice test covers the same hours.

Can a Class 7 driver ride a moped alone?

Yes. A Class 7 licence lets you ride a moped by yourself, with no supervisor. On a moped, you may not ride at night time, which starts one hour after sunset and ends one hour before the next sunrise. The zero alcohol and drug rule also applies on a moped.

Passenger and alcohol rules for learners

  • Carry no more passengers than there are seat belts in the vehicle. Breaking this rule costs 2 demerit points.
  • Before you start, count the people and the seat belts. If there are more people than belts, someone must stay behind.
  • Keep your alcohol and drug level at zero whenever you drive. Alberta applies zero tolerance to all Class 7 and Class 5-GDL drivers.

How long must you hold a Class 7 before the Class 5 road test?

You must hold the learner's licence for at least 12 months before you apply for a Class 5 licence. Time when your licence is suspended or cancelled does not count, so a suspension pushes the date back. The guide to the Alberta Class 5 road test covers the test itself.

What happens after the Class 7 stage?

After you pass the road test, you get a Class 5-GDL (probationary) licence. To get a full Class 5, you must be at least 18, drive for 2 years as a Class 5-GDL driver and be suspension and demerit free for the last 12 months. Since April 1, 2023, you do not need an advanced road test to leave GDL. The Alberta Class 5-GDL rules cover the next stage.

Alberta Class 7 rules: common questions

Can I have one drink and drive with a Class 7 licence?

No. A Class 7 learner must have no alcohol and no drugs in the body when driving. If police believe that a learner has any alcohol or drug in the body, the licence is suspended at once for 30 days and the vehicle is seized for 7 days.

Can I take my road test at 15 if I got my learner's licence at 14?

No. To get a Class 5-GDL licence, you must be 16 or older, have held your Class 7 licence for at least 12 months and pass the road test. If you got your learner's licence at 14, you must wait until you turn 16.

Does my supervisor have to bring their licence?

Yes. Your supervisor must have their own licence with them while you drive. That licence must be valid for the vehicle you drive, and it cannot be a learner's or probationary licence. If your supervisor forgets it, you cannot drive.

Can I learn to ride a motorcycle on a Class 7 licence?

Yes, if you are 16 or older. Your supervisor must hold a full (non-GDL) Class 6 motorcycle licence and ride as your passenger or in a vehicle close to you. A Class 5 supervisor is not enough for a motorcycle, and learners may not ride a motorcycle at night time.
