informational·how to guide·

Where the Arizona license fees and expiration rules come from

The amounts come from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) driver license fee page. The expiration rules come from A.R.S. 28-3171, and the renewal steps from the ADOT renewal page. The reinstatement fee and the duplicate photo rule come from the Arizona Driver License Manual (revised March 2026). The Travel ID details come from the ADOT Arizona Travel ID page. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the ADOT Motor Vehicle Division (azdot.gov/mvd) before you drive.

A Travel ID is valid for up to eight years in most cases. At 60 or older it is valid for five years from the issue date, and at 58 or 59 it expires in the year you turn 65. Why the Arizona license fee is low: valid until age 65

A.R.S. 28-3171(A) says a driver license is valid until the applicant's 65th birthday, unless medical restrictions require a shorter period. Thus a $25 license that you get at 16 to 39 can stay valid until 65, and at 50 or older the fee is $10 for fewer years. After the 60th birthday, a license is renewable for successive periods of five years. A license first issued to an applicant who is 60 or older is valid for up to five years. A Travel ID has its own validity rules, so do not read the 65th birthday rule as a Travel ID rule.

How to renew an Arizona driver license

  1. 1
    Check the date

Apply for renewal before your license expires. You may renew within six months of the expiration date.

  2. 2
    Sign in at AZMVDNow.gov

In most cases you can renew online. Sign in to your account at AZMVDNow.gov and choose "Renew Now" in the My Credential box. Activate your account first if you need to.

  3. 3
Visit an office if you must

Some renewals need an office visit for an updated photo and a vision test, and you present your identification documents. Book an appointment at AZMVDNow.gov or go to an Authorized Third Party driver license location.

  4. 4
Add the Travel ID if you want it

A renewal can also be your chance to apply for the Travel ID. You must visit an office for the photo and your identification documents.

Special cases for expiration and renewal

A non-Travel instruction permit costs $7. A restricted instruction permit costs $3. Arizona law allows it for an applicant who is at least 15 and is enrolled in a driver training program that the department approves. A duplicate instruction permit costs $2.

Can my Arizona license expire before I turn 65?

Yes, in some cases. A medical restriction can make the period shorter. A license first issued at 60 or older is valid for up to five years. Out-of-state students and some military family members may get a license of up to five years. A Travel ID is valid for up to eight years in most cases, so it can expire before your 65th birthday.

How much does it cost to reinstate an Arizona license?

After a revocation, the Arizona Driver License Manual lists the application fee and a $20 reinstatement fee. After a suspension, you pay the reinstatement fee and the license application fee for your age group. You cannot pay a reinstatement fee by check, so bring cash, a credit card or a money order.

A duplicate license costs $12, for a non-Travel license and for a Travel license. The manual says that you can get a replacement license online at AZMVDNow.gov. If your license is more than 12 years old, you must visit an MVD office for the duplicate, so that your photo can be updated.
