Arizona MVD Road Test: What to Bring, Scoring and Test Day Rules

informational·how to guide·

Where the Arizona road test rules come from

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) lists the rules on its road tests page. The Arizona Driver License Manual (revised March 2026) repeats the vehicle rules. The ADOT teen driver page gives the driver education option and the out-of-state license note. A.R.S. 28-3164 covers the examination of original applicants. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the ADOT Motor Vehicle Division (azdot.gov/mvd) before you drive.

How the Arizona road test works

You drive a test route with a variety of traffic situations. An examiner rides with you, gives you directions and grades specific actions and your general ability to drive the vehicle safely. Examiner instructions are in English.

You must schedule an appointment, and booking it online is highly encouraged. The steps are: check that you are eligible, fill out the driver license application, sign in to AZMVDNow to schedule an appointment, bring your documents, get your photo taken at an MVD office, and then pay and take the road test.

What to bring to the Arizona road test

  • A vehicle in good operating condition with valid registration and current liability insurance. You provide the vehicle for the test.
  • Out-of-country insurance is not acceptable.
  • For a rental vehicle, your name as the applicant on the rental agreement.
  • A parent or legal guardian, if you are under 18.
  • An instruction permit held for at least six months, or a passed written test if you are over 18. See the Arizona instruction permit rules and this practice question on the permit holding period.
  • Valid identification, plus proof of the vehicle's current registration and insurance.
  • An understanding of Arizona traffic signs and of directions in English.

Vehicle condition rules for the Arizona road test

The manual lists what must work on the test vehicle: brakes, brake lights, turn signals and the horn. The windshield must have no cracks, the vehicle needs both inside and outside rearview mirrors, and the tires must be in good condition. The driver and passenger side windows must operate, and the driver and passenger doors must open and close properly. A 1972 or newer vehicle must have seat belts that are properly fastened and adjusted. Check each item a few days before the test; this practice question on required working equipment covers the same checks.

Driver assistance systems on the Arizona road test

You may not use Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) during the road test. The ban covers auto-drive and parking assistance, and it is not limited to them. You do every maneuver yourself, with the features off. If your car has these systems, learn how to switch them off before test day, or practice in a car that does not have them.

Arizona road test day rules

  • Only one road test per customer, per day is permitted.
  • Road tests may be suspended due to weather or safety conditions.
  • From June 1 through September 22, a vehicle without air conditioning cannot be used for skills testing after 12 o'clock. In those months, book a test before 12 o'clock or use a car with working air conditioning.

How the Arizona road test is scored

The MVD page sorts scored items into four groups by point value. The points of your mistakes add up during the test, and 21 points or more is a fail. The table gives examples from each group, with each group name as the page writes it.

Road test point groups and examples

Road test point groups and examples
Group on the MVD pageExamples listed
Driving and Parking 10pts/eachFailure to full stop at sign/light, crowding center line, fails to yield, speeding (5-9 mph), following distance, impeding the flow of traffic
Driving and Parking 4pts/eachNot wearing seatbelt, improper lane change, signaling, jump or hit curb
Driving and Parking 2pt/eachOperation of vehicle, steering, waits too long, too slow
Basic Safety Knowledge 1pt/eachLocate speedometer, demonstrate hand signals, yield right when emergency cars approach

Why one 10-point mistake matters

A 10-point item is worth almost half of the 21 points that fail you. Two of them make 20 points, so one more small mistake ends the test. Practice a full stop at every stop sign and red light, a safe space behind the car ahead, and speed at or below the limit. Driving too slow and waiting too long also cost points, so move with traffic when it is safe. Fasten your seat belt before you start: not wearing one is a 4-point item.

English sign prompts during the road test

Before the test, you must show that you understand the meaning of Arizona traffic signs. During the test, the examiner gives directions in English: stop, slow down, drive straight ahead, change lanes left or right, and turn left or right at the next street, corner, stop sign or traffic light. The MVD page also lists the questions "does your speedometer work?" and "does your seat belt work?". If you do not understand the signs in English, you get a rescheduled appointment.

Who can skip the Arizona road test?

You are a teen who finishes a driver education class
The ADOT teen page lists this option as "(Road Test Waived)". You complete a high school or privately operated driver education program and give proof of completion within twelve months of issuance. Under A.R.S. 28-3164, ADOT may accept documentation of a completed driver training course that the department approves. See the Arizona Class G teen license rules.
You are a teen who does supervised driving practice option 1 or 2
You take the road test after you complete the driving practice.
You have an out-of-state driver license
The ADOT teen page says that you may transfer it to an Arizona license of the same class. Ask MVD whether you need a road test before you book one.
You apply for your first driver license and no other option applies
Plan for the road test. Under A.R.S. 28-3164, ADOT may examine an applicant for an original license, and the examination includes an actual demonstration of your ability to control the vehicle.

Key takeaways

  • Bring a vehicle in good operating condition with valid registration and current liability insurance. Out-of-country insurance is not acceptable.
  • Under 18, a parent or legal guardian comes with you. You need a permit held six months, or a passed written test if you are over 18.
  • 21 points or more is a fail. One 10-point item, such as no full stop at a sign or light, uses almost half of that.
  • Driver assistance systems, including auto-drive and parking assistance, are prohibited. Only one road test per day is allowed.
  • Next step: practice on the free Arizona Instruction Permit practice test. It is in English only.

Arizona road test: common questions

Can I use a rental car for the Arizona road test?

Yes, if the rental agreement lists you as the applicant. The car must still be in good operating condition, with valid registration and current liability insurance, and insurance from outside the country is not accepted. Check the brakes, lights, horn, mirrors, windshield and tires before you leave the rental counter.

If I fail the road test, can I take it again the same day?

No. ADOT MVD permits only one road test per customer per day. You must schedule a new appointment, for example through AZMVDNow. Before the next test, practice the items that cost you the most points, such as full stops, following distance and yielding.

Can I take the road test in a car without air conditioning in summer?

Only in the morning. From June 1 through September 22, ADOT MVD does not let you use a vehicle without air conditioning for skills testing after 12 o'clock. Book an early appointment in those months, or borrow a car with working air conditioning.

Does my parent have to come to the road test if I am 17?

Yes. An applicant under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian at the road test. You also need an instruction permit that you held for at least six months. If you are 18 or older, a passed written test is enough instead of the six months.

What happens if I do not understand the examiner's English directions?

You get a rescheduled appointment, so you come back another time. The examiner uses English for directions such as stop, slow down, change lanes and turn at the next street. Learn these words and the Arizona traffic signs before your appointment.
