Arizona Permit Test: Questions, 80% to Pass and How It Works

informational·how to guide·

Where the Arizona permit test facts come from

The facts in this guide come from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Motor Vehicle Division (MVD): the written and verbal tests page, the practice tests page, the manuals page, the teen permit and license page, the Permit Test @ Home page and the Arizona Driver License Manual. Arizona Revised Statutes section 28-3164 lists what the examination covers. The saved copy of the written test page is from November 2025, so this guide does not give its number of questions, test format or test hours. Check that page for the current details. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the ADOT Motor Vehicle Division (azdot.gov/mvd) before you drive.

What is on the Arizona permit test?

The questions are taken from the Arizona Driver License Manual, and so are the questions in the ADOT practice tests. Arizona law, A.R.S. 28-3164(B), says the examination tests your eyesight and your ability to read and understand official traffic control devices. It also tests your knowledge of safe driving practices and Arizona traffic laws, including the laws on bicycles, and your knowledge of the effect of a portable wireless communication device, such as a cell phone, on safe driving. Give these manual topics extra study time.

Where and when to take the Arizona permit test

  • MVD office: ask ADOT MVD for the current test hours. On the second Wednesday of each month, the manual says most offices are closed until noon. Choose a different day.
  • Authorized Third Party provider: Arizona law lets ADOT accept an examination by an authorized third party. These privately operated offices offer most MVD driver license services. Ask the provider before you go if it gives the knowledge test.
  • At home, for teens: ADOT's 2026 teen page says a teen can pass the knowledge test in an office or by the Permit Test @ Home. The Permit Test @ Home guide explains this option.

How to study for the Arizona permit test

Start with the Arizona Driver License Manual on the ADOT manuals page. Printed copies may be available at Authorized Third Party providers. The Spanish manual is an unofficial translation. Then take the three ADOT driver license practice tests to check your knowledge for a driver license or instruction permit.
Our practice tests are free and in English only. Like the ADOT practice tests, they are practice questions, not real test questions. For example, try our question on the Arizona written test format. Use your wrong answers to find the manual chapters to read again.

Arizona permit test: common questions

What happens if I fail the Arizona permit test?

Study the manual chapters that you missed. Then ask your MVD office about your next attempt and about the test options that it offers. Use the ADOT practice tests to check your knowledge before you try again.

Do adults have to take the Arizona permit test?

Yes, if you never had a driver license. The manual says applicants must pass the Division's written test before an Arizona instruction permit is issued. If you hold a license from another state, ask ADOT MVD which tests apply to you.

Can I take the Arizona permit test on a weekend?

Ask ADOT MVD for the current office test hours. Authorized Third Party providers often have extended hours on weekends and evenings, and convenience fees apply. Ask the provider before your visit if it gives the knowledge test. A teen can also pass the knowledge test by the Permit Test @ Home.

What do I need to bring after I pass the Arizona permit test?

If you are under 18, bring the originals of your supporting documents and your parent or guardian, who signs approval. An MVD agent or a notary public must witness the signatures. If your approvers cannot come, a signed notarized application is required. In the office you also pass the vision test and have your photo taken.
