Florida Driving Test: Class E Skills Test Maneuvers and Vehicle Check

informational·how to guide·

Where the Florida skills test facts come from

The maneuvers, vehicle rules and test locations come from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) page on the Class E Knowledge Exam and Driving Skills Test. The fees and the rule on out-of-state licenses come from section 322.12 of the 2026 Florida Statutes and the FLHSMV teen FAQ. The teen rules come from the FLHSMV Graduated Driver License page and section 322.1615. The FLHSMV General Information page, the What to Bring FAQ and the Official Florida Driver License Handbook add details. The facts are as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (flhsmv.gov) before you drive.

What the Florida Class E skills test checks

To get a Class E driver license, you must pass the Class E Driving Skills Test. Florida law requires you to show, in a real car, that you can control it in an ordinary and reasonable way. Practice questions for the signal and following rules

What your car needs for the Florida driving test

  • Valid registration and proof of insurance.
  • A pass on a basic vehicle inspection. The driver license examiner does it to find out if the car is safe for a driving exam.
  • Not a low-speed vehicle. A low-speed vehicle has a top speed of 20 to 25 miles per hour.

Car problems that stop the Florida driving test

  • A defective or inoperable horn, rear-view mirror, directional signals, steering wheel, brakes, tires, brake lights or taillights.
  • No windshield wiper on the driver's side, or no operable headlights.
  • Cracked or broken glass that hinders visibility.
  • An expired tag.

Can someone ride with me on the driving test?

No. No other passengers are permitted during the exam. A parent or friend who brings you to the test waits outside the car until you finish.

Where you can take the Class E skills test

  • At a service center.
  • With a driver license exam provider or a third party administrator.
  • In a high school driver education class that is authorized to give the test through the Driver Education Licensing Assistance Program (DELAP).

Who needs the Florida skills test

If you are under 18 and have a learner's license (often called a permit)
You must pass the Class E Driving Skills Test to get your Class E driver license. First meet the teen requirements in the next list.
If you are 18 or older
You also pass the Class E Driving Skills Test. The rule to hold a learner's license for 12 months ends when you reach 18.
If you have a valid license from another state or a province of Canada
Florida law says the department may waive the knowledge and skills tests when you surrender that license. The FLHSMV General Information page says a new resident who exchanges a valid out-of-state license passes the vision and hearing tests only. The What to Bring FAQ says every out-of-state driver takes the vision test. Our guide to moving to Florida with a driver license has the next steps.

Teens: what you need before the skills test

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Hold your learner's license for at least one year (12 months), or reach 18, whichever comes first.
  • Have no moving violation convictions for one year from the date your learner's license was issued. You may have one moving violation if adjudication was withheld.
  • Have a parent, guardian or responsible adult over 21 complete the Certification of Minor Driving Experience Form. It certifies 50 hours of driving, and 10 of them must be at night.
  • Practice only with a licensed driver who is at least 21 and sits in the closest seat to your right.

After you pass the Florida skills test

You may surrender your learner's license at a service center to receive your Class E driver license. A 16-year-old driver may drive only between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., and a 17-year-old only between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m., unless driving to or from work or with a licensed driver who is 21 or older. Our guide to the Florida teen driver license curfew explains these limits.

Florida driving test retest fee

If you hold a learner's license, you pay no fee for the skills test that you pass. If you fail the first skills test, each later skills test costs $20 (the knowledge exam retest is $10). A $6.25 service fee applies to all driver license transactions at a tax collector office. After a fail, the examiner asks you to study or practice before you come back.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the Florida road test in a Jeep without doors?

No. The examiner does not give the test in a Jeep-type vehicle without framed canvas or metal doors held by hinges and a door latch. The test is also not given in a vehicle with no doors, or when the front doors do not open from both the inside and the outside. Put the doors on, or use a different car.

Will the examiner tell me what I did wrong on the Florida road test?

Yes. After the exam is completed, the examiner explains any mistakes that you made. If you fail, the examiner asks you to study or practice before you come back for a retest. Use the explanation to choose the maneuvers that you practice with your supervising driver.

Do I have to retake the road test if I passed with a third party administrator?

Possibly. A person who passes the skills test with an authorized third party administrator may be randomly selected for a no-fee mandatory re-test without prior notice. After a passing re-test in a driver license or tax collector office, the license is issued. If you fail the mandatory re-test, you pay a re-exam fee at the next attempt.

Can I take the Florida road test at my high school?

Possibly. Many high school driver education classes are authorized to give the Class E Driving Skills Test through DELAP. When you pass there, your driver education teacher enters the result into the FLHSMV test records. Contact your local high school to find out if it takes part in DELAP now.

Can I use a backup camera on the Florida road test?

No. For the backing maneuver, turn around and look directly through the rear window while you back slowly. The Official Florida Driver License Handbook also warns that cameras and alarms do not always detect small children and animals, so practice backing without the screen before test day.
