ICBC Road Test (Class 7): How to Book, Fees and What to Bring

informational·how to guide··

Where these rules come from

This guide uses ICBC's Get your L, road test fees and Book a road test pages, other ICBC licensing pages (such as Get your N, Prepare for your road test appointment, Accepted ID and Graduated Licensing Program changes), and Order in Council 350/2026, which sets the learner time limits from October 19, 2026. Rules and fees are as of 2026. Confirm them with ICBC (icbc.com) before you book.

How to book the Class 7 road test in B.C.

  1. 1
    Get your keyword ready

You need your ICBC security keyword to book a road test online. If a driving school books the test for you, do not give the school your keyword.

  2. 2
    Book online

Book, reschedule or cancel a Class 7 road test appointment online. Pick a date on or after the earliest test date on your Class 7L licence.

  3. 3
    Book well ahead

ICBC offices can get busy, especially in spring and summer. Earlier dates can open up when other people cancel or reschedule.

  4. 4
    Arrive at your check-in time

Bring two pieces of ID, payment for the test fee and a test-ready car. The lists below give the details.

Can you take a standby Class 7 road test?

Yes, at the ICBC offices that offer standby tests for Class 7. Standby tests suit people with a flexible schedule who can wait at a driver licensing office. Spots come from cancellations and no-shows, so ICBC cannot guarantee one. In the Lower Mainland, spots go by random draw: arrive with your car and stand in line before the office opens. Outside the Lower Mainland, spots go first come, first served. ICBC lists the standby offices on its Book a road test page.

What to bring to your Class 7 road test

  • One primary ID and one secondary ID. A B.C. learner's licence with your photo counts as primary ID.
  • Payment for the test fee.
  • A safe, reliable and insured car with a Canadian licence plate. You give the plate number at the counter.
  • Your IMM1442 immigration form, if you used one the last time you got your B.C. licence or BCID. Bring it even if it has expired.
  • An original authorization letter, if the car comes from a car-share co-op or company and you are not the named member. It needs company letterhead, a signature and a date, and you need a new letter for each attempt.

Rules for the car on test day

  • Turn off all GPS and navigation systems. Audio, video and other recording devices are not allowed.
  • You can use the hazard warning system, but you must turn off driver assistance features if possible.
  • The inside of the car must be scent-free.
  • Check that the car has no outstanding serious safety recall. ICBC may cancel the test for one.

The 10 most common reasons ICBC does not accept a car for the test

  • A cracked or illegally tinted windshield or windows
  • Dash warning lights, such as an air bag light, that affect the safe operation of the car
  • Seatbelts that do not work or are frayed
  • Brake lights, signal lights or headlights that do not work, or badly cracked or missing lenses
  • A dirty interior, or items that affect health or safety
  • Unsafe or illegal modifications
  • A horn that does not work
  • Unsafe tires
  • Doors or windows that do not work, for example a door that does not open from inside
  • A gas tank or electric charge that is too low

How long is the Class 7 road test, and what does the examiner check?

The full test takes about 35 minutes, including time at the end to go over how you did. The examiner looks for different driving skills done in a safe, smooth and controlled way, not for perfection. After the test, you get a paper copy of your results. The Skills Explainer sheet on the back lists the skills every driver must show to pass, and the examiner may circle the ones to work on. The common skills below come from ICBC's Class 5 road test page, and not every skill is part of every test.

Common road test skills to practise

  • Driving through intersections, including left and right turns
  • Pulling into traffic
  • Pulling over and stopping at the side of the road
  • Changing lanes
  • Parking and starting on a hill. A free practice question shows which way to turn your wheels on a hill.
  • Backing up
  • Parking: angled, parallel and stall, both forward and backing in
  • Two and three point turns
  • Merging on and off a highway
  • Pointing out hazards when the examiner asks, such as dangerous drivers, emergency vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycles

How long you wait to retake the Class 7 road test

After your second test30 days
After your third and each later test60 days

Is there still a second road test after the Class 7?

No. From October 19, 2026, a Class 7 driver with a clean driving record no longer takes a second road test to get a Class 5 licence with restrictions. A Driving Record Assessment replaced it. A driver under 25 can apply after 24 months of safe driving with the Class 7 licence, or after 18 months if the driver took an approved Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) course in the learner phase (an ICBC rule). At 25 or older, the wait is 12 months. No prohibitions, suspensions, or convictions for excessive speed or electronic device use are allowed. The guide on the Driving Record Assessment gives the steps.

Key takeaways

  • You can take the Class 7 road test after 12 months as an L driver if you are under 25, or 9 months if you are 25 or older. Time under a prohibition does not count.
  • Book online and book early. The fee is CAD 50, paid on arrival, and CAD 25 if you cancel with less than 48 hours' notice.
  • Bring one primary and one secondary ID, plus a safe, insured car with a Canadian licence plate and GPS turned off.
  • After a fail you wait 14, 30 or 60 days, depending on how many tests you have taken.
  • Next step: practise on the free British Columbia Class 7 practice test.

ICBC Class 7 road test: common questions

Which payment types does ICBC accept for the road test?

ICBC driver licensing offices accept cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, debit cards and personal cheques. You pay the test fee when you arrive, not when you book, so bring one of these payment types with your ID.

Can my parent or a friend ride along on the road test?

No. Only the driver examiner and you can be in the car on the road test. No other person may come, including a translator, a child or an infant. Pets are not allowed either, except guide dogs and service dogs.

What happens if my learner licence expires before my road test?

A Class 7L licence stays valid for 2 years. If it expires, you must take the knowledge test again, but you do not wait any extra time for the road test. The knowledge test costs CAD 15 for each attempt, and a new photo learner licence costs CAD 10.

Do I need an N sign after I pass the Class 7 road test?

If you are under 25, yes. A green magnetic N sign replaces the red L, and it goes on the back of your car while you drive. From October 19, 2026, a driver aged 25 or older does not need to display the N sign. The guide to the Class 7 N stage rules covers the other limits.

Can I retake the ICBC road test the next day if I fail?

No. You must wait at least 14 days after a first fail. Each retest costs the CAD 50 road test fee again. Use the wait to review the feedback on your test form and the skills that your examiner circled on the Skills Explainer sheet.

How do I book a road test if I drive on a non-B.C. licence?

If you drive on a non-B.C. licence, have passed the B.C. knowledge test and do not have a B.C. learner licence yet, contact the ICBC driver licensing information line to book your road test. If you hold a B.C. learner licence, book online with your keyword.
