How Much Is an Indiana Learner's Permit and Driver's License? BMV Fees 2026

informational·how to guide·

Where these Indiana fees come from

The fees come from the BMV Fee Chart (revised 1/1/26) and the Indiana Driver's Manual (July 2026). The Driver Safety Program numbers come from the BMV citation, points and Driver Safety Program page. Card fees, license validity and driver education details come from other Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) pages and BMV news releases. This guide is current as of 2026. The Fee Chart gives one price for a license under 75 and no separate line for a probationary license. Confirm the rules with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (in.gov/bmv) before you drive.

Is the Indiana driving test free?

Yes, when the BMV gives it. The BMV does not charge for its driving skills test. Book the appointment 48 hours to 3 weeks ahead, and bring your own vehicle. Driver education providers can also give the driving test. Read what to bring and what fails you in the guide to the Indiana BMV driving test.

Does driver's ed cost extra?

Yes, and the BMV does not set the price. A driver training program is 30 hours of classroom training, or online training instead, plus six hours of behind-the-wheel training with a BMV-licensed driver training school. Each school gives the BMV a schedule of all its tuition, fees and charges when it applies for its school license. Before you enroll, ask each school for its total price and what the price includes. If you choose an online course, first confirm that your school accepts it.

How much is the Driver Safety Program?

  • Cost: no more than $55 for any BMV-approved course, and you pay it yourself.
  • Length and format: at least four hours, online, on DVD or in a classroom.
  • Under 21: if you are convicted of two or more traffic offenses, the BMV can require a course. Finish it within 90 days of the BMV's mailed notice, or your driving privileges are suspended. Read what happens after a ticket for a driver under 21.
  • Point credit: any Indiana driver can take a course for a 4-point credit, at most once every three years. The course does not remove a citation from your driver history.

How much is a replacement license or permit?

To amend or replace a credential (a license, permit or ID card) costs $9. If it is lost or stolen and your name and address did not change, order the replacement on myBMV or at a BMV Connect kiosk. You can replace a credential online up to 10 times; after that, go to a BMV branch. If information other than your mailing address changed, you cannot replace it online. Visit a branch within 30 days of the change to amend the credential.

How do you pay the BMV, and what does a card add?

For example, if the percent applies to the $17.50 license price, the fee is $0.40 plus $0.36, or about $0.76, for a total of about $18.26. For the $9 permit, the fee is $0.40 plus $0.19, or about $0.59, for a total of about $9.59. At a branch you can also pay with cash or with a check made out to "BMV" or "Bureau of Motor Vehicles".
