Iowa Permit Test Languages: 20 Options, Audio and Interpreters
In which languages can you take the Iowa permit knowledge test?
The Iowa DOT lists 20 languages for its operator knowledge test, the test you take for a permit, with written and audio translation: Albanian, Arabic, Bosnian, Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hmong, Italian, Korean, Laotian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Spanish and Vietnamese. If your language or dialect is not on the list, ask for a test with an interpreter, by appointment only.
Where the Iowa test language facts come from
The test language list, the interpreter appointments and the language help come from the Iowa DOT immigrant and refugee process page. The manual languages come from the Iowa DOT driver's manual page. The oral test rule and the rule that each permit needs the operator knowledge test come from Iowa Administrative Code chapter 761-604. Other facts come from Iowa Code 321.186, the Iowa DOT page on the instruction permit under age 18, the Iowa DOT practice test page and the Iowa driver's manual of July 2026. The DOT page shows no date for its language list. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Iowa DOT (iowadot.gov) before you drive.
Which Iowa test the 20 languages cover
The languages are for the operator knowledge test. Iowa requires this test for all noncommercial driver's licenses and for all special licenses and permits, so it is the test you take for an instruction permit. If you are under 18, you pass the knowledge test and a vision test to get your permit. Our free question on who needs the operator knowledge test uses the same rule. The table below uses the DOT's own language names.
Iowa knowledge test languages (DOT list of 20)

|---|---|---|---|
| Albanian | Chinese | Hmong | Portuguese |
| Arabic | French | Italian | Russian |
| Bosnian | German | Korean | Somali |

How to plan an Iowa knowledge test in your language
- 1Check the list of 20
Find your language in the table above. Confirm it with a driver's license service consultant before your test day.
- 2Write down your language
Have someone write the language or dialect you need on a piece of paper, and bring it with you. Staff use the note to get an interpreter on the phone.
- 3Speak with a driver's license service consultant
Go to a driver's license service center or call. A contracted language provider gives interpretation in person and by phone. Ask for the written and audio test in your language, or for an interpreter appointment if your language is not on the list.
- 4Study before the test day
Read the Iowa driver's manual and practice the questions. Our guide to the Iowa permit knowledge test covers what is on the test and how to retake it.
Iowa oral knowledge test: who can ask for it
If you are unable to read or understand a written test, you may request an oral test under Iowa Administrative Code 761-604.9. An examiner or an automated testing device gives the oral test. Iowa law also tells the DOT to make every effort to accommodate an applicant who cannot read well when that applicant takes a knowledge test.
Is the Iowa driver's manual in my language?
The Iowa DOT driver's manual page lists the manual in 25 other languages, and it marks each of these files as Archived. The English manual is there as a complete book and in 5 chapters. Language resources for the study manual are limited. The manual list and the test list are two different lists, so a manual in your language does not always mean a test in your language. The table below shows the differences.
Iowa test languages and manual languages compared
| Question | Knowledge test list | Driver's manual list |
|---|---|---|
| Where the list is | DOT immigrant and refugee process page | DOT driver's manual page |
| Number of languages | 20 | 25 |
| What you get | Written and audio translation of the knowledge test | A translated manual file, marked Archived |
| Names that differ | Cambodian, Chinese, French, Laotian, Portuguese | Khmer, Traditional Chinese, European French, Lao, Brazilian Portuguese |
| Only on this list | None | Dari, Nepali, Pashto, Swahili, Ukrainian |
Practice tests: ours in English, the DOT's also in Spanish
Our free Iowa practice questions are in English only, with no audio. The Iowa DOT practice test has 25 questions chosen at random from sample questions on the real knowledge test. On that DOT practice test, a score of 80% or higher is a pass, and you can take it as many times as you want. The DOT practice test page also has a Spanish version. The real knowledge test checks that you can read and understand Iowa traffic laws and highway signs. Our free question on what Iowa's operator knowledge test assesses covers that rule.
