What to Bring to the RMV for a Massachusetts Learner's Permit
Which documents do I need for a Massachusetts learner's permit?
Bring originals (no photocopies, nothing laminated) to your RMV appointment for a standard Class D learner's permit: one identity and date-of-birth document (Option A) or two (Option B), your Social Security number, one proof of Massachusetts residency, and your printed, signed application page. Under 18, a parent or guardian must also sign written consent. The application fee is $30 (U.S. dollars).
Where this document list comes from
The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) sets these rules. This guide uses the page Apply for a passenger Class D learner's permit, the RMV Class D or M learner's permit document checklist and the RMV REAL ID documents checklist. It also uses the RMV guide How to Prepare for a Learner's Permit Appointment, the RMV ID requirements page and the Driver's Manual (revised April 2026). This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Massachusetts RMV (mass.gov/rmv) before you drive.
How do I start, and when do I need the documents?
You must be at least 16 and a Massachusetts resident. Start the application online, then make an appointment at an RMV Service Center, or at an AAA location if you are a member. If you held a Massachusetts license, permit or ID card before, log in with a MyMassGov Personal account to begin. Print, sign and date the Application/Confirmation page and bring it. The documents below are for a standard Class D permit unless a line says REAL ID.
Rules for every document
- Bring originals. The RMV does not accept photocopies.
- The RMV does not accept laminated documents.
- A document that is not in English needs a certified translation document with it.
- A document marked "dated within 60 days" must be within 60 days of your appointment.
- Bring the checklist itself, with the documents you selected and your completed application.
Standard Class D permit checklist: how many of each document
| What you prove | How many documents | Key rules |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and date of birth, Option A | 1 document from the Option A list | Unexpired, or expired for less than 36 months. |
| Identity and date of birth, Option B | 2 documents, 1 from each column | Both valid and unexpired. Use Option A or Option B, not a mix. |
| Social Security status | Your SSN, or 1 allowed document if you have no SSN | No SSN document if your SSN validates with the Social Security Administration. With no SSN: an Affidavit of No SSN (Option B only) or an SSN Denial Notice dated within 60 days. |
| Massachusetts residency | 1 document | It shows your name and current residential address. No P.O. boxes and no "in care of." |
| Application | 1 printed page, signed and dated | The Application/Confirmation page from your online application. |
Which identity documents work, and when do I need a second one?
Option A is one document, such as a U.S. passport or passport card, a Permanent Resident Card, or an original or certified U.S. birth certificate issued by the city, county or state of birth. A foreign passport counts under Option A only with a valid U.S. visa, and you show it with your I-94 record. Option B is two documents: first a foreign passport (no visa required) or a consular identification card; the second can be a driver's license from any U.S. state or territory or a foreign driver's license.
REAL ID or standard permit: what is the difference?
| Item | Standard permit | REAL ID permit |
|---|---|---|
| Star and federal use | No star. A standard license is not accepted for federal purposes. | A star in the top right corner. |
| Identity | Option A (1 document) or Option B (2 documents). | 1 document that proves you are in the U.S. legally. It must be valid and unexpired. |
| Social Security number | Give your SSN, or use an allowed document if you have none. | 1 document with your full 9-digit SSN and your current name, such as your SSN card (not laminated) or a W-2. |
| Massachusetts residency | 1 document. | 2 documents. Only one of them can be an item issued by the RMV. |
| One document for two proofs | - | Not allowed. A single document cannot meet more than one proof requirement. |

What are the vision screening and photo rules?
At your application you must pass a vision screening for field vision and basic colors. Wear the contact lenses or glasses you normally use to see at a distance. If you fail, decline or cannot take the screening, the RMV may accept an original RMV Vision Screening Certificate completed by your ophthalmologist or optometrist.
The photo must show all of your facial features. Eyeglasses are not allowed, including reading or prescription glasses, even if you normally wear them. A hat or head cover is allowed only for medical or religious reasons, and only if it hides no facial feature.
How much does it cost, and how can I pay?
The learner's permit application fee is $30, and you pay it before you take the knowledge exam. You can pay by cash, check, money order, credit card or debit card, but the methods vary by location. You can also prepay your license and road test fees then. All RMV fees can change at any time. The guide to the Massachusetts permit test explains the exam you take at the same visit.
What happens if a document is missing or a check takes longer?
How long is the permit valid after the appointment?
A learner's permit is valid for 2 years or the length of your stay in the U.S. If it expires, you must reapply and retake the knowledge exam. The free practice question on how long a Massachusetts learner's permit is valid tests the two-year rule. Read the Massachusetts learner's permit guide for what the permit lets you do.
Frequently asked questions
Which documents prove Massachusetts residency for a learner's permit?
One document with your name and current residential address, such as a utility bill or bank statement dated within 60 days, an official school transcript for the current year, or a school enrollment letter dated within 60 days. P.O. boxes are not accepted. Under 18, you can use an Alternative Residency Affidavit.
Do I need a REAL ID to get a Massachusetts learner's permit?
No, it is an option. From age 18, you need a REAL ID driver's license or ID card, or another ID the TSA accepts, to board domestic flights. A REAL ID permit needs one lawful presence document, one proof of your full Social Security number and two proofs of residency.
Do I need to bring my Social Security card?
Not for a standard permit: you give your number, and if it validates with the Social Security Administration, no document is needed. For a REAL ID permit, bring one document with your full 9-digit number and current name, such as your SSN card (not laminated) or a W-2.
Can my grandparent sign my permit application if I am under 18?
Only as your legal guardian. Written consent must come from a parent, legal guardian, the Department of Children and Families or a boarding school headmaster, who signs the application. A signer who is not a parent shows proof of guardian status at the permit application and again at the road test.
What if I do not have a printer for my application page?
Go to your appointment anyway. An RMV staff member prints the Application/Confirmation page when you arrive at the Service Center. Sign and date it in the spaces provided. This printed page is your completed learner's permit application.
Can I use documents that are not in English?
Yes, if each one comes with a certified translation document. This applies, for example, to a foreign driver's license that you use as your second Option B document. Without the translation, the document does not meet the checklist rules.
