New Brunswick Written Test (Class 7 Level 1): Pass Mark, Online

informational·how to guide·

Where this information comes from

This guide uses the Government of New Brunswick page on written and road tests, the New Brunswick Driver's Handbook, Part 1 and the gnb.ca fee table, as of 2026. The question counts come from the Driver's Handbook (2022). Where the handbook and the newer gnb.ca page differ, this guide follows the gnb.ca page. Confirm the rules with Service New Brunswick (gnb.ca) before you drive.

What is on the New Brunswick written test?

The Class 7 Level 1 licence is the New Brunswick learner's licence. To get it, you pass a knowledge test, also called a written test. It has two exams: a road sign recognition exam and a rules of the road non-commercial knowledge exam. You must be at least 16 years old to take it.

Questions and pass mark in the Driver's Handbook

Questions and pass mark in the Driver's Handbook
ExamWhat the handbook saysHow you pass
Road sign test20 signsGet the stop, yield and school zone signs right, with not more than four errors on the other signs
Rules of the road test20 multiple choice questions on the traffic laws and safe driving in the handbookAnswer 16 correctly

How to study for the sign test and the rules test

Read and study the Driver's Handbook. The rules test covers the traffic laws and the rules for safe driving in the handbook. On the sign test, learn the stop, yield and school zone signs first, because you must get all three right to pass. The test uses only metric units, so learn distances in metres and speeds in km/h. Try our free practice question on the sign test pass rule. Our practice questions are free and in English only. They are not the real test questions.

Can I take the New Brunswick written test online or in person?

Both. You can take the knowledge test online, or book an in-person test at your local Service New Brunswick (SNB) office online or by calling TeleServices at 1-888-762-8600. You choose one option, not both. The test has a cost either way.

Online test: payment and access code

  • Pay online by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover), debit card (Visa or MasterCard) or Interac Online (TD Canada Trust accounts only).
  • When your payment is complete, you get an access code to take the test.
  • You can save the access code and use it later if you need to.

The first attempt costs $25 CAD, as of August 1, 2026.

Can I take the written test in English or French?

Wait one day, then try again.
You fail the second attempt
Wait one week before you try a third time.
You fail three times
Book an appointment to take the test in person at a Service NB Driver Examiner office.

What does a re-write cost, and how long do results last?

A re-write costs $15 CAD, as of August 1, 2026, and Regulation 83-42 sets the same $15 CAD re-examination fee. Our guide to New Brunswick test fees and retakes also covers the road test and licence fees. Test results are valid for 6 months, and your licence must be issued within six months of the start of the process. Our free question on expired test results shows what that means.

What happens after you pass the written test?

Passing the written test starts Level 1, the licence that people used to call a learner's permit. If you have no driver's licence yet, the SNB office asks for one proof of identification and two proofs of residency. Our guide on what to bring for your learner's licence lists the documents. You then hold Level 1 for at least one year before the road test, or eight months if you passed a licensed driver training course in the previous 2 years (green certificate).

Key takeaways

New Brunswick written test: common questions

Can I take the New Brunswick written test at 15?

No. The minimum age for the Class 7 Level 1 written test is 16, and the Motor Vehicle Act lets a person apply for a learner's licence at 16 or older. If you are under 18 when you pass, you also need a completed consent form for your visit to the Service New Brunswick office.

Can I fail the sign test with only one wrong answer?

Yes, if the wrong answer is the stop, yield or school zone sign. The Driver's Handbook says you must identify those three signs correctly. On the other signs, you can make up to four errors and still pass. Learn those three signs well before your test.

Can I take the written test online again after I fail three times?

No. After three failed attempts, you book an appointment to take the test in person at a Service NB Driver Examiner office. Before that, you wait one day after a first fail and one week after a second fail. Each re-write costs $15 CAD, as of August 1, 2026.

Do I still go to Service New Brunswick if I pass the test online?

Yes. Wait at least four business days after you pass, then visit an SNB office. There you do a vision test (20/40 in your best eye), show proof of identification and proof of residency, and hand in the consent form if you are under 18. Go within 6 months, while your test results are valid.
