Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Road Test: What to Bring and Expect
When can I take the Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 road test?
You can take the road test after 12 months as a Class 5I driver, or after 8 months if you completed an approved driver education program. Book it before your Class 5I period ends. The fee is CAD 78 (CAD 39 for seniors aged 65 or older). Pay at least 24 hours before the test. Bring your payment receipt, Class 5I licence, insurance and vehicle registration.
Where these road test rules come from
The steps and the list of items to bring come from the Motor Registration Division (MRD) licence application page of Digital Government and Service NL, and from the MRD Driver's Handbook. The fees come from the MRD Fees Policy (updated December 21, 2023). The time you must spend at Level I is set in the Highway Traffic Driver Regulations, 1999. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Motor Registration Division (gov.nl.ca/motorregistration) before you drive.

When to pay for the road test
Pay your road test fee at least 24 hours before the test. If your receipt is slow to process, the appointment can be cancelled, so do not leave the payment to the last day. You can pay online on MyGovNL, or in person at a Motor Registration office or a Government Service Centre. Keep the receipt, because you give it to the examiner.
What to bring to the road test
- The receipt that shows you paid for your road test.
- Your valid Class 5I driver's licence. The Driver's Handbook calls it the Class 5I learner's permit.
- A valid insurance policy.
- The valid registration certificate for the vehicle you use during the test.
- Proof that you finished an approved driver training course, if it applies to you. You can test yourself on this list with the road test documents question.
What happens on road test day
- 1
Arrive 15 minutes early
Have your receipt, licence, insurance and registration ready to give to the examiner.
- 2
Listen to the pre-test instructions
The examiner explains the test first. You must take the road test as the examiner instructs.
- 3
Pass the vehicle check
At the start of the test, the examiner checks the mechanical condition of your vehicle.
- 4
Do the parking test
You must pass a parking test as part of the road test.
- 5
Drive the road part
You show that you can drive safely without supervision while you deal with other road users.
- 6
Hear your results
The test ends with a summary of your results.
What the examiner checks on your vehicle
The examiner checks the licence plate, lights, horn, rear-view mirror, windshield wipers, muffler, brakes, tires, windshield, window glass and steering. Check these items yourself before test day, so that you have time to fix a burned-out bulb or a cracked windshield. The test also includes identifying and operating your vehicle's controls, so learn where each control is in the car that you will use.
Driving skills on the road test
- Handling the vehicle: steering, braking and speed control.
- Choosing the proper lane for turns.
- Observing and obeying speed zones.
- Deciding who has the right of way at intersections and when you change lanes.
- Driving through intersections with and without signs and signals.
- Parking.
Common reasons for not passing
- Exceeding the maximum number of points for errors.
- Exceeding the speed limit, or driving too fast for the conditions.
- Not stopping completely before you go through an intersection with a stop sign, or before you turn right on a red light. The full stop at a stop sign is also a practice question.
- Not yielding the right of way at an intersection or during a lane change.
- Blocking traffic because you drive too slowly or stop when you do not need to.
- Any unsafe driving behaviour that makes the examiner stop the test.
After you pass: the clerk step
Passing moves you from Class 5I (Level I) to Class 5II (Level II). You get the new licence only after a clerk processes you: you give the passed road test receipt and pay the licence fee. Passed road test results are valid for 12 months. The Class 5II novice licence guide explains the next stage, which lasts 12 months.
Class 5I rules that stay in force until you pass
- An accompanying driver sits in the front seat beside you. This person has held a Class 5 licence (or an equivalent) for at least 4 years.
- You carry no passengers other than the accompanying driver.
- Your blood alcohol content is 0%.
- Your vehicle shows a "NOVICE DRIVER" sign at the rear, with black letters at least 5 cm high on a white background.
- You do not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.

Newfoundland and Labrador road test: common questions
How long is the road test?
The road test takes about 30 minutes. That time covers the examiner's pre-test instructions, the inspection of your vehicle, the parking and road parts of the test, and a summary of your results at the end.
Do adult new drivers also wait 12 months before the road test?
Yes. The graduated licence program applies to all new drivers, whatever their age. An adult with a Class 5I licence waits 12 months, or 8 months after an approved driver education program, before the road test, the same as a 16-year-old.
Can I take the road test in a car that is not in good condition?
No. The examiner does not conduct a driving test in a vehicle that is unsafe or does not meet the equipment requirements. Fix any faulty light, worn tire or broken wiper before test day, or use a different vehicle with valid insurance and registration.
What if my Class 5I licence expires before I take the road test?
You can renew the Class 5I licence at a Motor Registration office. If you let it expire for more than 12 months, you must take the written test again before it is re-issued. To avoid this, book your road test before your Class 5I period ends.
