Nova Scotia Road Test: How to Book, Cost and What to Bring

informational·how to guide·

Where this information comes from

The booking, fee, length and document rules come from the Nova Scotia Book a Road Test page. The payment options are on the Pay for a Road Test page. The waiting times and the course hours come from the Driver Licensing Requirements Regulations (N.S. Reg. 236/2026), and the supervising driver rules from the Driver's Licence Regulations (N.S. Reg. 226/2026), both under the Traffic Safety Act. The examiner checks come from the Nova Scotia Driver's Handbook and Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) guidance pages. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Nova Scotia Registry of Motor Vehicles (novascotia.ca) before you drive.

When can you take the Class 5 road test?

You must hold a learner's licence for at least 12 months in total. Time with a Class 6N or Class 8 licence also counts. The wait is 9 months if you finished a Class 5 driver education course. By law, this course has at least 25 hours of theory and at least 10 hours of in-vehicle lessons in which you drive. You take the test in a Class 5 vehicle that is not towing a vehicle. A pass gives you the Class 5N (newly licensed) licence, not a full Class 5 licence.

How to book your Nova Scotia road test

  1. 1
    Clear any fines or fees

Pay all outstanding fines and reinstatement fees before you book. You cannot receive or upgrade your licence after the test until they are paid.

  2. 2
    Choose how to pay

Pay by credit card during online booking. You can also pay in person with cash, debit or cheque at any Access Nova Scotia or RMV office. Then you get a road test receipt number.

  3. 3
    Start the online booking

Use the Book a Road Test page, and pick an Access Nova Scotia location that offers driver examination and testing. If you paid in person, enter your road test receipt number when the page asks for it.

What to bring to the road test

  • Your valid driver's licence (for most readers, the Class 7 learner's licence)
  • A vehicle for the test. None is provided.
  • Proof of motor vehicle liability insurance for that vehicle
  • A valid vehicle permit or temporary permit
  • Proof of valid motor vehicle inspection
  • Your certificate of completion from a recognized Driver Training School, if you took a course
  • A supervising driver for the drive to the test. A Class 7 learner must always drive with one, and the supervising driver sits in the front passenger seat.

Will the examiner check your car?

Yes. Before the road test, your vehicle gets a Safety Check, even when its inspection is valid. RMV guidance says the test cannot take place unless the vehicle is in good mechanical condition with a valid registration and inspection. Check the lights, horn and wipers before you leave home. Test yourself with the free practice question on the vehicle condition for a road test.

What the examiner watches during the road test

What the examiner watches during the road test
SkillWhat the Driver Enhancement Officer looks for
Equipment checkBefore you drive off, you show the signal lights, horn, brake light, headlights, windshield wipers and hand signals
Vehicle controlHow well you start, stop, turn and park, with stops and starts on a level road and on a hill
Backing and parkingBacking up, and parallel or angle parking
ObservationShoulder checks, when and how often you use your mirrors, and where you look
Space and lane changesHow you manage the space around your vehicle, and how safely you change lanes
CommunicationHow you use turn signals and brake lights to tell other road users what you will do

How long is the drive, and when do you get the result?

RMV guidance says the examiner takes you over a course of at least 3 km, in traffic where possible. At the end, the Driver Enhancement Officer tells you if you passed or failed. The officer also goes over your driving and explains your mistakes and how to improve.

If you fail or need to change your plans

Your road test is incomplete or you fail it
The Book a Road Test page says you must wait until the next day before you book another road test. The Registrar can also set a waiting period before you take the test again, so ask about the wait when you rebook.
You need adjustments for medical, cultural or religious needs
Do not book online. Call 1-800-898-7668 to make the booking. The RMV makes adjustments as the law allows.
You paid and booked, but you need a different date
Change the date online on the Reschedule a Road Test page.

What happens after you pass?

A pass gives you the Class 5N licence. RMV guidance says you get a temporary document that is valid for 30 calendar days, and your licence has a large letter N. The usual route to a full Class 5 licence needs at least 24 months at the Class 5N stage. The Class 5N rules for newly licensed drivers give the limits that apply to you.

Key takeaways

  • Wait 12 months with your learner's licence, or 9 months after a Class 5 driver education course, before you take the road test.
  • Book online or by phone and pay CAD 52.54 (HST included). The Class 5 test takes 30 minutes.
  • Bring your licence, your own vehicle, insurance, the vehicle permit, inspection proof and any driving school certificate.

Nova Scotia road test: common questions

Can I pay for my road test with cash?

Yes, but not online. Go to any Access Nova Scotia or Registry of Motor Vehicles office and pay with cash, debit, cheque or another non-credit card method. You get a road test receipt number. Enter that number when you book your test online.

Can I pay now and book my road test later?

Yes. Use the Pay for a Road Test Receipt page to pay online by credit card. The service emails you a road test receipt with a number. Keep it. When you are ready to book, enter the number during online booking. The fee is CAD 52.54 (HST included).

Can I drive myself to the road test?

Only with a supervising driver. Until you pass, you are a learner, and a Class 7 learner must have a supervising driver in the front passenger seat. That person cannot be a learner, a newly licensed driver or another novice driver. Their licence must allow them to drive the vehicle.

Is there parallel parking on the Nova Scotia road test?

Yes, it can be. RMV guidance lists parallel or angle parking among the moves on the driving test, with backing up, turns, following another vehicle and stops and starts on a hill. Practise each of these moves with your supervising driver before the test.
