Nova Scotia Class 7 Rules: Supervising Driver, Passengers, Zero Alcohol

informational·how to guide··

Where the Class 7 rules come from

The Traffic Safety Act (S.N.S. 2025, c. 20) replaced the Motor Vehicle Act on October 19, 2026. The learner rules are in the Driver's Licence Regulations (N.S. Reg. 226/2026), and the novice driver definition is in the Traffic Safety Act Interpretation Regulations (221/2026). The rule on learner time after a suspension is in the Driver Licensing Requirements Regulations (236/2026). The maximum fines are in the Offences, Penalties and Mandatory Suspension Periods Regulations (223/2026). The night driving guidance comes from the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) Class 7 learner's licence page. This guide is current as of 2026, and it follows the regulations where an RMV page words a rule differently. Confirm the rules with the Nova Scotia Registry of Motor Vehicles (novascotia.ca) before you drive.

Who can be a supervising driver for a Class 7 learner?

  • You need a supervising driver each time you drive any vehicle other than a Class 8 vehicle. The Class 7 licence lets you practise in every other class of vehicle.
  • The supervising driver sits in the front passenger seat beside you.
  • They hold a valid licence of the right class, with the required endorsements, for the vehicle you drive, and the licence has no restriction that stops them from driving it.
  • They are not a licensed learner, a newly licensed driver (Class 5N or 6N) or another novice driver.
  • They keep the licence with them while they supervise and show it to a peace officer on demand.

Who counts as a novice driver in Nova Scotia?

The Traffic Safety Act Interpretation Regulations name three groups of novice drivers: licensed learners, newly licensed drivers, and fully licensed drivers who have held the full licence for a combined period of less than 2 years since they stopped being newly licensed. A person in any of these groups cannot supervise you. When a full-licence driver passes the 2-year mark and holds a valid licence for your vehicle, they can supervise you.

Can a Class 7 learner drive at night in Nova Scotia?

Yes. RMV guidance says that a Class 7 learner has no night driving restriction, because a supervising driver is with you on every trip. The curfew from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. applies to newly licensed drivers (Class 5N and 6N), so it starts at the next stage. The guide to the Class 5N newly licensed driver rules explains the curfew and its exceptions.

Zero alcohol and no drugs for Class 7 learners

  • Alcohol: you must not drive with more than 0 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Even one drink breaks this licence condition.
  • Drugs: you must not drive with any drug in your body that you are not legally permitted to use for a medical purpose.
  • The same two conditions apply to newly licensed drivers and to other novice drivers.
  • A practice question on the 0% blood-alcohol rule checks this condition.

What happens at 4 demerit points on a Class 7 licence?

As a Class 7 holder, your demerit point threshold is 4 points. At 4 points, your driving privilege is suspended for 6 calendar months. The suspension does not start until 30 days after the conviction that took you to 4 points, unless an exception applies, for example if you tell the Registrar that you will not appeal. The time you held your Class 7 licence before this suspension does not count toward the time you must hold it before you can get a Class 5N licence. The guide to new driver demerit points explains how points are added and removed.

What can I drive with a Class 7 licence in Nova Scotia?

No, except in a Class 8 vehicle. In any other vehicle, a Class 7 learner must have a supervising driver in the front passenger seat on every trip, at any hour. To drive a car without a supervising driver, you must first pass a road test in a Class 5 vehicle and get a Class 5N licence.

Can my friends ride with me if my parent is supervising?

No. When a parent or another driver who is not a licensed instructor supervises you, nobody else may ride in the car. Extra passengers are allowed only when they are examiners, or when a supervising driver with a valid instructor or fleet driver trainer licence takes up to 3 students who sit in the rear seat for driving instruction.

Does my supervising driver have to be a parent?

No. Any person can supervise you if they sit in the front passenger seat, hold and carry a valid licence for the vehicle you drive, and are not a learner or a newly licensed driver. A driver who has held a full licence for less than 2 years since leaving the newly licensed stage cannot supervise. A relative, a friend or a driving instructor who meets these rules can.
