What you get for CAD 15.03

You must pass the Knowledge Test before you can get a Learner's Licence (class 7). You pay CAD 15.03 for a test in two parts. The Rules of the Road Test covers traffic laws and safe driving, and the Road Sign Recognition Test covers road signs. Each part has 20 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 16 correct in each part to pass. You have 30 minutes for each part, and you should get your results right away. The guide to the Nova Scotia learner's test has more on the format and what to study.

How to pay for the Knowledge Test

Online, you pay the CAD 15.03 fee by credit card. The accepted cards are Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard. The full list of payment options for the test is credit card, debit card, cheque, money order and cash, and the options may vary depending on how you take the test. Make a cheque or money order payable to the Minister of Finance. If you cannot take the test online, you can take it in person at the Registry of Motor Vehicles or an Access Nova Scotia office.

How to pay and take the test online

  1. 1
    Check that you can apply

You must be 16 or older. If you are 16 or 17, you need written consent from a parent or guardian.

  2. 2
    Get your equipment

You need an email address, a desktop computer or laptop, and a web camera connected to it. You cannot take the test on a phone, tablet or other device. You can try a sample test first to learn how the online test works.

  3. 3
Fill in the form and pay

Complete the Application Information Form online and pay the CAD 15.03 fee by credit card.

  4. 4
    Keep your confirmation email

The service emails you a payment confirmation. Keep a copy for your records.

  5. 5
Take the test now or later

When your payment is complete, you can start the test right away. Or you can sign in later with the access code in your confirmation email.

Which part you retake if you do not pass

If you do not pass, you pay for another test and take it again. But you do not always take the whole test again. You retake only the part you did not pass: the Rules of the Road Test or the Road Sign Recognition Test. If you did not pass either part, you retake both. For example, if you get 17 of 20 on the rules part and 14 of 20 on the signs part, you retake only the Road Sign Recognition Test.

How long you wait to retake the test

You took the Knowledge Test online
There is no waiting period. You can take the test again as soon as you are ready, after you pay for another test.
You took the Knowledge Test in person
You wait until the next day to retake the test.
Your online test was flagged for review
It should take 1 week to get your test results. You know only then if you need to retake a part.

Use the retake to fix your weak part

Each retake means another test fee, so study the part you missed before you pay again. If you missed the rules part, practise questions on road positions and right of way, such as which side of a two-way road to travel on. If you missed the signs part, practise reading signs, such as a sign that tells you to wait for a green light before turning right. The practice tests on this site are free and in English only.

Other fees on the way to a licence

A pass does not give you the licence, and you cannot drive right away. You complete the other requirements at the Registry of Motor Vehicles or Access Nova Scotia and pay the Learner's Licence fee of CAD 25.10, with no tax. Later, the road test costs CAD 52.54 for all classes, HST included. Example: one Knowledge Test, the Learner's Licence and one road test cost CAD 15.03 + CAD 25.10 + CAD 52.54 = CAD 92.67. One more Knowledge Test adds CAD 15.03, for CAD 107.70. The list of what to bring for a learner's licence shows the documents you need.
