NY Permit Test: How Many Questions and What You Need to Pass
How many questions are on the NY permit test, and how many must you get right?
The New York written permit test has 20 questions. To pass, you must answer at least 14 correctly, and you must also answer two of the four road sign questions correctly. The test covers the rules of the road, safe driving techniques, road signs, and the laws about alcohol and drug use while driving. Applicants under 18 can take it online.
Where the New York permit test facts come from
The pass mark, the test topics and the vision test come from the New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21). The online test and the office steps come from the DMV page on how to prepare for and take your permit test. The study chapters and the practice quizzes come from the DMV page on the Driver's Manual practice tests. The permit age, the fee and the language help line come from the DMV learner permit, fees and language assistance pages. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the New York State DMV (dmv.ny.gov) before you drive.
NY permit test pass mark at a glance
| Part of the test | What you need |
|---|---|
| Written test, all questions | At least 14 of the 20 questions right |
| Road sign questions | At least 2 of the 4 road sign questions right |
| Vision test | 20/40 vision in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses |
How many questions can you miss on the NY permit test?
You can miss up to 6 of the 20 questions, because you need 14 right. The road sign rule still applies: at least two of the four road sign questions must be right. If you miss three or more road sign questions, a high total score does not pass the test. So give the road signs as much study time as the rules of the road.

Which parts of the NY Driver's Manual to study first
Chapters 4 through 11 hold the material you must know to pass the written test for a Class D, DJ or E learner permit. Part 1 (Chapters 1 to 3) has information every driver should know, but the permit written test does not cover it. Start with Chapters 4 through 11 and the sign chart. A printed copy of the manual is free at DMV offices or by mail, and you can download the full 80-page PDF.

How to take the NY permit test step by step
- 1Study
Study the Driver's Manual and take the DMV practice quizzes. The study plan below shows the order.
- 2Find your documents
You need proof of age, identification and residence. The DMV pre-screening tool shows the forms and documents to bring, and the ID-44 guide lists every proof. Your permit will be Standard, Enhanced or REAL ID, depending on the proofs you bring and the fee. See which documents count as proof before you go.
- 3Go to a DMV office
Bring the Application for a Permit (MV-44), your proofs of identity, age and residence, and the permit test fee. The fee depends on your age and where you live, and the DMV fee chart gives an estimate.
- 4Pass the vision and written tests
When you pass the vision and written tests and pay your fees, the DMV issues your learner permit, and you can start to learn to drive.

NY permit test: common questions
What happens if you fail the NY permit test?
For the school program, the DMV Online Knowledge Test Application at participating high schools, the Driver's Manual says that students who fail can take the test again online as many times as the school allows. Before your next try, take the chapter quizzes and the Road Signs Quiz in the DMV online manual until you pass them easily.
How old do you have to be to take the NY permit test?
New York residents 16 and older can apply for a learner permit. Through a school program at participating high schools, students who are at least 15 years and 11 months old can take the written test early. At 16, they can bring their receipt and completed forms to a state or county motor vehicle office to apply for the permit.
Is there an eye test with the NY permit test?
Yes. You must pass a vision test as well as the written test. You need 20/40 vision in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses such as glasses or contact lenses. If you cannot pass the vision test, or if you wear special lenses, contact a DMV Call Center for instructions.
Is the NY permit test on a computer or on paper?
Both are possible. In New York, Class D knowledge tests can be taken on a touch screen test station or on paper. If you are under 18, you also have the option to take the permit test online before your visit to a DMV office.
Are the DMV practice quizzes like the real permit test?
Yes. The chapters of the DMV online Driver's Manual have interactive quizzes with actual test questions. The online manual also has a Road Signs Quiz and an All Chapters Quiz. Our own practice questions are separate: they are free and in English only, and they are not DMV test questions.
