Ohio Driver's Ed Requirements Under 21: 24 + 8 Hours and 50 Hours

informational·how to guide·

Where the Ohio driver's ed facts come from

The facts in this guide come from Ohio Revised Code 4507.21, the law on driver training, and from two pages of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV): the teen and new driver page and the page for non-permanent residents. Ohio Department of Public Safety driver training guides add some details. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Ohio BMV (bmv.ohio.gov) before you drive.

Does turning 18 remove the driver's ed rule in Ohio?

No. The course and the 50 hours still apply at 18, 19 and 20. For this age group, the order is clear: first a Class D driver education class at a licensed driver training school, then 50 logged hours of supervised practice with an eligible adult, then the driving and skills test.
The course must be one that the Ohio director of public safety approved, so check that a school is licensed before you enroll. Ask the school for its fee and schedule too.

What Ohio requires before the driving test

  • An approved driver training course. 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of driving time, at a licensed driver training school.
  • A Driver Education Certificate. This is the proof that you finished the course. Bring a copy to the driving and skills test.
  • A 50-hour affidavit. An eligible adult signs that you drove at least 50 hours, with at least 10 hours at night. Keep the practice log in the Supervised Driving Log section of the BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit.
  • A TIPIC. You practice with a temporary instruction permit identification card (the "temps" that people search for). While you hold a TIPIC at 18 or older, you may practice only with a licensed driver who is 21 or older.

Who can sign the 50-hour affidavit?

Under Ohio Revised Code 4507.21, an eligible adult is a parent, guardian or custodian of the applicant, or a person over 21 who acts in loco parentis (in place of a parent) with proof of financial responsibility for the applicant's driving. A knowingly false statement in the affidavit is a minor misdemeanor with a $100 fine.
Keep the log on paper or in the free RoadReady Ohio app, and have the affidavit signed and notarized. See the Ohio 50-hour affidavit and driving log guide for all steps. The person in the car has a separate rule: see the free question on who can supervise an adult TIPIC holder.

Steps from course to license for ages 18 to 20

  1. 1
    Get your TIPIC

Pass the knowledge test and the vision screening, then buy the TIPIC at a deputy registrar license agency within 60 days of the pass.

  2. 2
    Finish the approved course

Complete 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of driving at a licensed driver training school.

  3. 3
    Practice and log 50 hours

Drive at least 50 hours, with 10 at night, under the TIPIC rules. Record each session in the log of the BMV 5791 form, and have an eligible adult sign the affidavit.

  4. 4

Use BMV Online Services. Bring your TIPIC, a vehicle in good condition, the completed BMV 5791 and a copy of the Driver Education Certificate.

  5. 5
    Buy your license

After you pass the driving and skills tests, go to a deputy registrar license agency within 60 days to buy your driver's license.

What if you are 21 or older?

You are 21 or older and apply for a first Ohio license
You do not need the 24 + 8 hour course or the 50-hour affidavit. Under Ohio Revised Code 4507.21, those duties apply to applicants under 21 and to applicants for an initial limited term license.
You are 21 or older and fail your first road or maneuverability test, with no driver training course in the last 12 months
Show proof of an abbreviated adult driver training course before your second try. The abbreviated adult course guide explains the options.
You are 21 or older and fail the test a second time
You do not need another abbreviated course. Wait at least two days before you try again.
You are 21 or older and apply for an initial limited term license (the license for non-U.S. citizens that expires with the USCIS document)
You need the approved course and an affidavit for 50 hours of driving (at least 10 at night), signed by an adult with a current Ohio driver's or commercial driver's license who rode with you. Applicants from a country with a reciprocal arrangement with the registrar are exempt. Check the Ohio Traffic Safety Office driver training rules before the test.

Can the armed forces course count?

Yes, in one case. A comparable course run by a branch of the U.S. armed forces counts if you finished it while you lived outside Ohio to be with or near a person serving in the armed forces. A person who gets a waiver of the examination from the registrar under Ohio Revised Code 4507.10 is exempt from the course rule.

Key takeaways

  • Every Ohio license applicant under 21 needs an approved driver training course. Age 18, 19 or 20 does not remove it.
  • The BMV says the course is 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of driving at a licensed driver training school.
  • You also need a 50-hour affidavit, with at least 10 hours at night, signed by an eligible adult.
  • At 21 or older there is no course for a first license (except an initial limited term license), but an abbreviated course follows a failed first road or maneuverability test.
  • Next step: practice on the free Ohio temps (Class D knowledge) practice test. Its questions are in English only.

Ohio driver's ed: common questions

Can I take the classroom part of Ohio driver's ed online?

Yes. The 24 hours of classroom instruction can be online, but the 8 hours of driving are behind the wheel with a licensed driver training instructor. Choose a licensed driver training school, because the course must be one that the Ohio director of public safety approved. Ask the school for its fee and schedule before you pay.

Do I need the Driver Education Certificate at 18?

Bring a copy. At 18, 19 or 20, the BMV may ask for the Driver Education Certificate at the driving and skills test if it cannot verify your course electronically, and the test checklist for this age group lists a copy of it. Under 18, you must show the certificate at the test.

How many practice hours does Ohio require under 21?

At least 50 hours of practice driving, with at least 10 of them at night. These hours come in addition to the 8 driving hours of the course, and an eligible adult signs the affidavit that confirms them. Try the free question on the 50-hour practice log under 21 to check what you know.

Can I take the Ohio knowledge test online at 18?

Yes. Applicants aged 18 to 20 can take the knowledge test online at BMV Online Services, or in person at select deputy registrar locations or any driver exam station. An online tester who is younger than 19 needs a supervising adult who passes identity verification as the proctor. After an online test, the vision screening is done when you buy the TIPIC.

How long do I wait to retest if I fail the driving test under 21?

Two days. Applicants under 21 who fail a driving or skills test must wait two days before they test again. The abbreviated adult driver training course after a failed test is a rule for applicants 21 or older only. Bring your TIPIC and the completed BMV 5791 affidavit again to the new test.
