Can International Students Drive in PEI on a Home Country Licence?
Can international students drive in PEI on a home country licence?
Yes. Under section 80(2) of the Prince Edward Island Highway Traffic Act, a student who is enrolled in a PEI university, college or school may drive on a valid licence from home until that licence expires. You may drive only the vehicle class that the licence allows. The four-month limit in section 80(1) is for other drivers from elsewhere. Ask Access PEI if you need an International Driving Permit.
Where these rules come from
This guide uses the Prince Edward Island Highway Traffic Act, current to May 29, 2026, the Highway Safety Division sheet on driver licence reciprocity of October 19, 2022, and the Driver's Handbook, revised Spring 2011, as of 2026. Where the 2022 sheet or the Handbook adds to the Act, the text names it. Confirm the rules with Access PEI (princeedwardisland.ca) before you drive.
What the student rule in section 80(2) needs
- You are enrolled in a university, college or school in Prince Edward Island.
- Your licence was issued by another province, state, territory or country.
- The licence is valid. Your right to drive under the student rule ends on its expiry date, so check that date before each term.
- You drive only a vehicle of the class that the licence allows.
Do you need an International Driving Permit in PEI?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a permit that a foreign country issues under the United Nations 1949 Convention on Road Traffic. It shows that you hold a valid licence at home. The 2022 Highway Safety sheet says that a full-time student at a PEI institution, such as UPEI or a college, may drive with a home licence that is current and valid and, "if required", comes with an International Driver's Permit. Ask Access PEI whether your licence needs one before you arrive.
How long you may drive on a licence from elsewhere in PEI
| Your situation | How long you may drive | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Student enrolled in a PEI university, college or school | Until your home licence expires | Highway Traffic Act, s. 80(2) |
| Other driver with a valid licence who comes or returns to PEI | Not more than four months from that date | Highway Traffic Act, s. 80(1) |
| Guest worker in PEI farming or fishing who is not a permanent resident, with a work permit and an IDP from the past 12 months | Up to eight months in any one year, in a Class 5 vehicle | Highway Traffic Act, s. 80(3) |
| Visitor with a six-month Visitor's Visa | The length of the Visitor's Visa | Highway Safety sheet, 2022 |
What if you stay in PEI after your studies?
The student rule covers you while you are enrolled in a PEI university, college or school. If you plan to stay and live in PEI after your studies, plan for a PEI licence. The 2022 Highway Safety sheet says that new residents may drive on a home licence for up to four months after they become a resident, and longer if they started the licence exchange but did not finish it in that time. The practice question on licensing for a new resident covers this step. The guide to exchanging a licence from another province or U.S. state explains that route.

Driving in PEI as an international student: common questions
Does the student rule work for a licence from another province or U.S. state?
Yes. Section 80(2) covers a valid licence issued by another province, state, territory or country, so a student from Ontario or a U.S. state uses the same rule as a student from overseas. You may drive until the licence expires, and only in the vehicle class that it allows.
Does an International Driving Permit replace my home licence?
No. An IDP only shows that you hold a valid licence at home. It goes with the home licence and does not replace it. For students, the 2022 Highway Safety sheet asks for a home licence that is current and valid and, if required, comes with the permit.
Can my family drive in PEI when they visit me?
Yes, if each driver is 16 or older, has a valid licence from home with them, is not prohibited from driving and drives only the class that the licence allows. Under section 80(1), a visiting driver may drive for not more than four months from the date of arrival. For a longer visit, ask Access PEI which time applies.
Can I drive a motorcycle or a truck in PEI on my home licence?
Only if your home licence allows that class of vehicle. Section 80(2) lets an enrolled student drive a vehicle of the class that the licence authorizes, until the licence expires. If your licence is for cars only, you may drive only a car.
