SGI Road Test: How to Book, What Your Car Needs and Automatic Fails

informational·how to guide·

Where these road test rules come from

The test rules come from the SGI Driver's Handbook (2026-27): the Your test page, the Before the examination page and the handbook pages on Graduated Driver Licensing and on preparing for the road test. The $55 fee is set in The Traffic Safety Act Fees Regulations. The nine-month and driver education rules are also in The Driver Licensing and Suspension Regulations, 2006. All amounts are in Canadian dollars. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with SGI (sgi.sk.ca) before you drive.

What you need before you can book the road test

In Saskatchewan's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, the road test is the step from a Class 7 learner's licence to a Class 5 Novice 1 licence. You must hold your Class 7 licence for at least nine months (274 days in the regulations). You must also finish the mandatory driver education: high school driver education (30 hours in class, six in the car) or six hours in class and six in the car with an SGI-certified driver instructor. SGI checks your training record on your electronic SGI file. The post on driver education in Saskatchewan compares the two options.

How to book the SGI road test

  1. 1
    Practise first

Get plenty of practice in different driving conditions, and drive exactly the way your instructor taught you.

  2. 2
Book with MySGI or a motor licence issuer

Book online with MySGI, or call or visit a motor licence issuer.

  3. 3
    Give a cellphone number

SGI then texts you to confirm the appointment and sends reminders 24 hours and one hour before it.

  4. 4
    Pay the exam fee

Pay the $55 road test fee before the test.

  5. 5
    Cancel if you cannot come

If you do not cancel and you do not come, you must pay again for the rescheduled appointment.

What to bring to the SGI road test

  • The vehicle. You must supply it, and it must be the right class for the licence you want.
  • Your photo ID.
  • Several pieces of original identification. SGI does not accept photocopies.
  • Proof of age: a birth certificate, a passport or another document that SGI accepts.
  • Papers that support the change, if your name changed because of marriage or another reason.
  • Your Driver Education Certificate, if there is no training record on your SGI customer file.

What your car must have for the SGI road test

The driver examiner inspects your vehicle before the test begins. These items must work: the horn, signal lights, brake lights, headlights, windshield wipers and defrost (the last three as required), seatbelts and airbags, the speedometer, and the driver's and front passenger's doors. The car also needs proper seats and one valid licence plate properly attached at the rear. The windshield must have no obstructing cracks, stickers or tint, and the windshield and front side windows must have no aftermarket tint. A free question page explains who must provide the road test vehicle.

When the SGI road test does not go ahead

You have held your Class 7 licence for less than nine months, or you cannot show proof of driver education
SGI reschedules the test.
You do not meet the vision or medical fitness standards
SGI reschedules the test.

What happens on the day of the road test

  1. 1
Arrive, park and turn off your vehicle. Stay in it, and text "Here" if you signed up for text notifications.
  2. 2
Keep your cellphone on, with the ringer or vibrate on. Your examiner calls you at your appointment time to ask some questions, then comes out to meet you.
  3. 3
Ask the examiner any questions about the test before it starts.

What the SGI examiner scores

The examiner scores how you obey road signs along the route, look ahead for possible hazards, back up, parallel park and make two-point turns. You are also scored on lane driving, shoulder checks, starting, stopping, traffic signs and signals, controlled and uncontrolled intersections, turns, and safe habits such as your choice of speed and your steering.

What makes you fail the SGI road test

  • Going over the speed limit.
  • A collision for which you are 50% or more responsible.
  • Not stopping where you must stop.
  • Not yielding to vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Disobeying traffic lights.
  • Needing help from the examiner.
  • A combination of minor mistakes.

If you fail: the two-week wait

After a failed Class 5 road test, you must wait two weeks before you can take another one. SGI may also recommend more training or set a longer learning period. You pay the $55 fee again before each road test. The free question on the road test retest wait checks this rule.

After you pass: update to Class 5 Novice 1

A passing result is valid for 12 months. Before you drive alone, update your Class 7 licence to a Class 5 at any SGI motor licence issuer. You then drive as a Class 5 Novice 1 driver for six months. The post on Novice 1 and Novice 2 rules explains the passenger and phone limits of that stage.

Key takeaways

  • Hold a Class 7 licence for nine months and finish driver education, then book with MySGI or a motor licence issuer.
  • Bring your own car in the right class, photo ID, original ID documents and proof of age.
  • The lights, horn, wipers, defrost, seatbelts, airbags, speedometer and front doors must work, the rear plate must be on, and the windshield must have no obstructing cracks.
  • You fail for speeding, a collision that is 50% or more your fault, not stopping where required, not yielding, disobeying traffic lights, needing the examiner's help or a combination of minor mistakes.
  • The fee is $55 each time. After a fail, wait two weeks.
  • Next step: practise the rules on the free Saskatchewan Class 7 practice test.

SGI road test: common questions

Can my parent ride with me during the SGI road test?

No. Only examination staff may be in your vehicle during the road test, and pets are not allowed either. Your parent or other supervising driver should wait in the SGI waiting room, not in the busy parking lot, while you take the test.

Can I take the SGI road test in another language?

No. SGI conducts road tests in English, and examiners give directions in simple, clear words. Before the test, learn these terms: right turn, left turn, lane change, traffic lights, intersection, stop, shoulder check, two-point turn and parallel park.

Will SGI accept my car if the windshield has a crack?

The windshield must have no obstructing cracks. If you are not sure that SGI will accept your cracked windshield, visit your local driver examination office before your test day. An examiner can check the windshield in person.

Can I book my road test in a different town?

You must book at your nearest examination office. In smaller centres, road test appointments are for local residents only. If you live in another area, book the test at the examination office nearest to you.

How do I get my SGI road test results?

At the end of the road test, you get a complete report with all errors explained. You get it on paper or by email, based on how the examiner scored your test. Emailed results link to the online Driver's Handbook. If you did not pass, the report shows where you must improve.
