At an intersection, a pedestrian carrying a white cane with a red tip starts to cross in front of you. What must you do?
A approaches a pedestrian using a white cane at the intersection. The person is crossing in front of A’s intended route.
Correct answer: Come to a complete stop and wait until the person has finished crossing
Why
A white cane, with or without a red tip, or a guide dog tells you that the pedestrian may not be able to see traffic. RSMo 304.080 requires drivers to yield to such a pedestrian, and the guide goes further: come to a complete stop and stay stopped until the person is safely across. The same law protects people who use a hearing dog or service dog.
