Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
You park a car with an automatic transmission on a level street and will be gone for a few minutes. Which steps secure it?
Correct answer: Shift to park, set the parking brake, stop the engine, take the keys, and lock it
Why
A parked car must stay put no matter what: the parking brake backs up the transmission, and taking the keys prevents theft or a child moving the car. Before you open the door, check your mirror for traffic and bicycles, and have passengers get out on the curb side when possible. With a manual transmission, leave the car in gear instead of park.
