Passing target: 80% (20/25)
A pedestrian with a guide dog steps into the street in the middle of the block, away from any crosswalk. The person does not carry a white cane. What must you do?
B and a dog in a guide harness step into the street midblock ahead of A. No white cane, intersection or crosswalk is drawn; a detail makes the guide harness visible.
Correct answer: Yield, stop if necessary, and take care so that the person can cross safely.
Why
A white cane, a white cane with a red tip, or a guide dog tells you that the pedestrian may be blind or visually impaired. The person may not see your car and may use sound to judge traffic, so stop and wait quietly without giving spoken directions. Give the person time to decide to cross; if the person steps back and pulls in the cane, it is a sign that you may go.
