Observation, Speed & SpaceStandalone practice
You drive at 35 mph on a dry street. The car ahead passes a signpost, and your front bumper reaches the same post as you finish saying "one thousand one." What does this tell you?
A’s front reaches a roadside post one second after B passed it. The card states that both cars travel at 35 mph on a dry street.
Correct answer: You are too close, because the minimum at 35 mph is 2 seconds.
Why
To check your gap, start counting when the rear of the vehicle ahead passes a fixed object, and stop when your front reaches it. Two seconds is only a minimum; many instructors advise up to 4 seconds. Add time at higher speeds, in rain or snow, when you cannot see well, and behind large trucks.
