Passing target: 80% (20/25)
You drive on a city street at about 30 mph. What is the minimum distance ahead that you should search for hazards?
A drives along a city street. A roadside object is visible ahead, and the card states a speed of about 30 mph.
Correct answer: 12 seconds ahead
Why
To check your look-ahead distance, choose a fixed object ahead and count the seconds until your car reaches it. If you reach it in less than 12 seconds, move your eyes farther down the road. Early sight of brake lights, turning cars and people near the road gives you time to slow smoothly instead of braking hard. Keep your eyes moving, and check the sides and your mirrors too.
