Passing target: 80% (20/25)
You drive on a rural highway with a 65 mph limit. Blowing dust lets you see only a short distance ahead, but some cars still go 65 mph. What speed does Nevada's basic speed rule require?
A drives on a rural two-lane highway posted at 65 mph. Tan blowing dust increasingly hides the roadway ahead, and no actual driving speed is shown for A.
Correct answer: A speed below 65 mph that lets you stop within the distance you can see.
Why
A posted limit assumes normal conditions, so the safe speed can be much lower when you cannot see well. Nevada law also requires drivers to slow down when weather or other hazards make it necessary. In dust or rain, increase your following distance too, because the drivers ahead may stop suddenly.
