Regulatory, Lane & Parking SignsStandalone practice
This sign stands beside the left lane of a city freeway. It is a weekday during the hours shown on the sign, and you are driving alone. May you use that lane?

Correct answer: No; it is for vehicles with at least three people.
Why
A white diamond on a sign or on the pavement marks a lane reserved for special use. HOV means high-occupancy vehicle, and the number shows how many people must be in the vehicle, so HOV 3 needs at least three. The sign also shows the days and hours when the limit applies; other reserved lanes may be for buses (transit) or bicycles.
