Regulatory, Lane & Parking SignsStandalone practice
On a clear, dry day you pass a white sign that reads SPEED LIMIT 45. Most traffic around you is going about 52 mph. What is the fastest you may lawfully drive?

Correct answer: 45 mph, even if other traffic is going faster
Why
The posted maximum is meant for ideal conditions; in rain, snow, ice or fog you must drive slower than the limit. Some high-speed roads also post a minimum speed, and if that minimum is too fast for you, use another road. A posted limit takes effect where its signs are in place, so watch for changes as you drive from one area to the next.
