Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
On an interstate highway, you drive past your exit by a few hundred feet. What should you do?
A has driven past a freeway exit that branches away behind its current position. The through lanes continue ahead.
Correct answer: Continue to the next exit, then find a safe, legal way to turn around.
Why
New Mexico law bans backing on the roadway or shoulder of a controlled-access highway and on its entrance and exit ramps. On other roads, the manual says never to back up in a travel lane except to parallel park. A missed exit costs a few minutes, but backing into fast traffic can cause a serious crash.
