The posted limit on a two-lane highway is 55 mph. A very heavy rainstorm starts, and you can now see only about 200 feet ahead. According to the manual, what is the fastest speed you can safely drive?
Correct answer: About 30 mph, because you need about 200 feet to stop from that speed.
Why
The idea behind this is simple: drive at a speed that lets you stop within the distance you can see. New Mexico law says that in every case you must control your speed as needed to avoid colliding with a person or vehicle and to use due care. Heavy rain also brings a risk of hydroplaning, and in a heavy rain tires can lose all grip at about 50 mph. If the rain becomes so heavy that you cannot see well enough to drive, pull off the road at a safe place and wait.
