Observation, Speed & SpaceStandalone practice
You are driving on a rural county road in New Mexico, outside any town or school zone, and you see no speed limit signs. What is the maximum speed?
Correct answer: 55 mph
Why
In New Mexico law, a county road is a road that the county builds and maintains, or one that the state has placed under county control. The county commission may set a lower limit after an engineering study and state approval, but that limit applies only once signs are posted. A maximum is not a target: county roads can be narrow or unpaved, and farm equipment and wildlife often use them. On gravel or dirt your tires have less grip than on pavement, so stops take much longer and you must slow down.
